Many thanks for your replies. I have Albert's birth certificate (born 19 Feb 1842), which shows Charlotte BULLOCK as the mother, but no father. Strangely, I don't have his marriage certificate, but know he married Louisa MARFELL on 8 September 1862. It was not unusual for people to invent a father to put on a marriage certificate, so I wonder if this happened in Albert's case.

Hi Sueg

Albert Bullock born Blaisdon 19.2.1842 married Louisa Marfell born 6.4.1845 Ruardean on 8th September 1862, St John's Church, East Dean. I have the marriage certificate which shows his father as William Bullock Labourer. Whilst I am fully aware that the fact that a father is shown on a certificate does not necessarily mean that it is the right one **, what leads you to suspect that he was illegitimate ? Unfortunately, I only have a transcribed version of the 1851 Census for Gloucestershire which shows:

Longhope
124
BULLOCK Charlotte 35 Huntley
Albert 8 Blaisdon

No detail as to the relationship. No doubt Slowhands can put this right.

** I have the original birth certificate and a copy of a forged one, used by a Marfell to enter the USA. He was illegitimate, but the forged version shows "a" fathers name, which happened to be his grandfather.

Charlotte BULLOCK b. 1814, Huntley, Glos

My 3rd Great-Grandmother is Charlotte BULLOCK born 1814 in Huntley, Glos. I have her in 1851 with her illegitimate son, Albert, age 8, born Blaisdon. Albert married Louisa MARFELL and they went on to have 12 children, one of whom was my great-grandfather Fred BULLOCK, who moved to Derbyshire.

I am unsure as to who were Charlotte BULLOCKs parents and wonder if anyone has a connection and could help me, or if anyone has further info on this family?

Many thanks, Sue Grundy
