Spelling - you will see plenty of variety on Census returns - I put this down to phoenetic recording rather than the individual spelling his own name.

As people became more educated , and hence could read and write, thats when I suspect they adopted a particular spelling ....

ELSMORE family of Bream

Hi
Does anyone out there have any info on the Elsmore/Ellsmore family of Bream. They have a gravestone in the shape of a large wooden cross next to the St James Church at Bream.

1871 Census Sarah and her husband John were Innkeepers of the Travellers Rest Parkend with their 7 children including my gt grandmother Cora Jane Elsmore Ledbury. As a matter of interest we cannot understand why they changed the spelling of their name on her wedding certificate to Ellsmore, which is the spelling that has been used by her family ever since.

1876 John Ellsmore died and (according to the family headstone at St James Churchyard) was late of the Fountain Hotel, Parkend

1881 Census Sarah ran the Swan Inn, Bream

1891 Census Sarah was living at Maypole Villa, Bream

1901 Census Sarah was living with son and daughter running the Rising Sun Inn, Bream.

1918 Sarah died and was interred at St James with husband John and several other members of their family.

Cherryl Alison Ellsmore Hubbard (nee Ledbury)
