Not found Emma J Dobbs after 1881 census when she is with her parents. After this date there are too many "possible" marriages to pin-point the correct person.
Rachel Dobbs1881 Census Cheltenham Gloucestershire
RG11, piece 2570, folio 22, page 3, GSU roll 1341619
Address: 7 Albert Place Cheltenham Gloucestershire
Rachel Dobbs age 16 is working as a Domestic Servant in the household of William Stephens Windown Blind Manufacturer

1891 Census Cheltenham Gloucestershire
RG13, piece 2048, folio 36, page 31, GSU roll 6097158
Address: Bath Road Cheltenham Gloucestershire
Rachel Dobbs age 26 is working as a House Maid in the household of Colonel John Moutray Read.

After 1891 Rachel is not found on the 1901 census. She could have married and there are several possible marriages for a Rachel Dobbs. Not persued this as I do not yet know which is the correct one. Maeve

Hi Jean

In 1901, Elizabeth Gagg nee Dobbs is a widow living with her mother in law Mary Gagg. Elizabeth's surname is shown as Gagg and she has with her the 4 children born to her marriage with the late Thomas Henry Gagg. Perhaps you could look at Elizabeth's sisters Rachel & Emma J. Perhaps one of them married a Howells.

Thank you both for your replies. My own idea was that perhaps the child was born to one of the children of George Dobbs prior to any marriage and was luckily given the father's surname, or. as you surmised, born of a previous marriage. I do not think we will ever be certain, unless a member of the Dobbs/Howell reads the message and gets in touch. Thank you again for your interest. Regards Jean Herbert

Hi Jean

I'm just wondering if Elizabeth married twice. On FreeBMD the following people are listed as having marriages registered at Westbury-on Severn in Sept 1897:

Cook William George
DOBBS Elizabeth
Hayward Eliza Ann
HOWELLS Henry

If she did, she used her maiden name but I can't find it on Parish Records to check. I can't find a burial for hubby either, so I'm probably totally wrong!
Regards
Christine

Hello Bertha
Thanks for your interest in my post re:Dovie Howell. Printed out the actual census and had a peer at it with my trusty magnifyer and will agree that the name looks like Doris.
Regarding the babtism you found. Not too sure about this.
George Dobbs (abt 1840) spouse Lavinia Herbert (1841). They married in 1864.
Children were:
Rachel Dobbs (abt 1865) no marriage found up to 1901, but on 1891 census she is age 26 working as a Servant for Colonel John Moutray Read in Cheltenham
George Dobbs (abt 1866) married Laura Minnie White in 1894. Up to 1901 they had no issue
Emma J Dobbs (abt 1869) no record found ater 1881,possibly married but no information.
Elizabeth Dobbs (abt 1871) married Thomas Henry Gagg in 1890
Herbert Thomas Dobbs (abt 1878) married Rosa Drew in 1898
Frank Albert Dobbs (abt 1884) married Amy Elizabeth Marfell
I did find a marriage reference 17 Nov 1889, of a William Neale Howell age 40 Widower married to Elizabeth Yarwood Widow age 32
Another one for a Henry Howell age 25 to Elizabeth Maddox spinster(father George Maddox).
I do not think that either of the two marriages are for Dovie (Doris Howell's parents )Any other suggestions? Regards Jean Herbert

1901 Census East Dean RG13, piece 2420, folio 120, page 36
Shows George Dobbs and family. Included in the census is a "Dovie Howell - grandaughter, age 2, born abt 1899 Cinderford". Can anyone tell me who her parents were? I can find no records of her birth or babtism under this name. Regards Maeve
