Emma Meek appears twice on the 1851 census, once as you say with her "grandparents" Thomas and Sarah Hayward.

Emma also appears with her parents Richard Meek and Jane Simmon[d]s but is recorded as Emey along with her sister Mary Ann Meek aged 2

The connection when listed with her "grandparents" is that Sarah Hayward is her blood grandmother, born Sarah Stephens c1789 she married William Simmonds, 23 March 1812 before marrying Thomas Hayward, 04 April 1826.

Jane Simmonds, who married Richard Meek was born to William Simmonds and Sarah Stephens in 1812, baptised 12 July 1812

On the 1851 Sarah HAYWARD is 60. Maybe Jane was her daughter.

Emma Meek born 1846 Daughter of Richard Meek and Jane Simmons.
According to the 1851 census Emma was living with Thomas Hayward Head, Wife Sarah, children Augusta Sophia, Jared Hayward.Emma is on the census as granddaughter age 5yrs.
No sign of her parents, can anyone explain to me if the Haywards are her grandparents where do they fit in with the Simmons and the Meeks. I know I am missing something here that I imagine is obvious but I just don't see it.
