Jane James/ Wait (reply)

Or she may not have been registered at all! There were no penalties for not registering until about 1875, so many people didn't bother. This of course makes life difficult for those of us that followed and are trying to find vital info.

Jane James/ Wait (reply)

Hi Jenny,
we're pleased we've helped you so far. In future please could you help us by posting a little more info, or better still by posting new queries such as this within associated threads. This helps us all to recollect the relevant information.
In this case the related thread iss http://forum.forest-of-dean.net/index.php?id=44022

I ask this as some children are baptised later in life, plus the sheer quantity of Births for "Jane James" I've just found on FreeBMD means it's helpful to know her likely birth date & place in advance.

In the above prior thread we find, for example, that
"In 1871 she might be hiding as:-
Town and Parish of Newnham
Jane WAITES, 15, Domestic servant, born Glos. Soudley (Newnham in brackets underneath)"
So she was indeed born abt 1856, sorry I'd forgotten all this until I searched thro' your earlier posts.

However unfortunately I cannot find a Jane JAMES registered within our area on FreeBMD or GlosBMD.
So perhaps as you suggest she was registered as WAIT(E) etc ?.

The nearest I can find on FreeBMD is this at Monmouth,

Births Jun 1856   (>99%)
------------------------------------------------------
Wait Jane Elizabeth Monmouth 11a 29

I cannot find any likely Jane Waits, Waites, Whaite etc on FreeBMD, but you may want to try other spelling variations as that site is fussy in this respect, plus of course errors may have crept in.

????

===============================================

FreeBMD also have this

Births Dec 1856   (>99%)
------------------------------------------------------
Waite Jane Eleanor Cheltenham 6a 336

GlosBMD also carry the same Birth for a "Jane E Waite" in Cheltenham in 1856, but they also show a Death for a "Jane Ellen Waite" aged 3 in Cheltenham in 1859, so ruling this one out.

So, how does this seem to you ?. The location is fine, does the second name Elizabeth fit within your experiences at all, perhaps further down her line ?? That said I've seen examples of people apparently "losing" forenames later in life, and even people "gaining" them compared to their Birth Registration, so ???

=================
=================

LATER UPDATE !
Sorry Jenny, looks like my suggested Monmouth Birth is a no-go, as I've just seen the same Registration within GlosBMD, but giving mother's surname as Griffiths.

Birth Details
Child Surname Child Forename Father Surname Mother Surname Mother's Former Name Year District Office Register Entry
WAIT Jane Elizabeth WAIT WAIT GRIFFITHS 1856 Forest of Dean Monmouth, Coleford 12 110

Which I GUESS relates to this Baptism,

Sorry, ????

=================

EVEN LATER UPDATE !!

Hi again, just thought I'd had my eureka moment, realised the birth registration MAY have named her as just "Female" and not the Jane I've been searching.

However, repeating all the above surname searches hasn't got me any nearer, eg from FreeBMD I can find:

Births Mar 1855   (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
James  Female     Westbury S.  6a 196

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Births Sep 1855   (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
James  Female     Monmouth  11a 22

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Births Sep 1856   (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
James  Female     Ross  6a 398

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Births Dec 1856   (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
James  Female     Newent  6a 187

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Births Sep 1857   (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
James  Female     Ross  6a 386

etc...

Some of the above are within GlosBMD with extra info, eg

Birth Details
Child Surname Child Forename Father Surname Mother Surname Mother's Former Name Year District Office Register Entry
JAMES Female JAMES JAMES HATHAWAY 1855 Gloucester Gloucester, Huntley 6 431

Birth Details
Child Surname Child Forename Father Surname Mother Surname Mother's Former Name Year District Office Register Entry
JAMES Female JAMES JAMES JAMES 1855 Forest of Dean Monmouth, Coleford 11 274

Birth Details
Child Surname Child Forename Father Surname Mother Surname Mother's Former Name Year District Office Register Entry
JAMES Female JAMES JAMES WILLIAMS 1856 Gloucester Gloucester, Newent 9 206

SO, again, nothing gained, I think ???
