There is also a Thomas BALLINGER, aged 25, in the household (also born in county) but I can’t see yet where he might fit in.

Further to my previous reply, if John Ballinger and Elizabeth Bessex do prove to be Edwards parents and they were married at Dixton Parish Church, a brief search of Baptisms on this site show the following children Baptised at Dixton.
1781..Thomas
1783..Illegible
1784..Isaac

The following may be pure coincidence but the following were Landowners in Whitchurch Parish in 1844 (Source Geoff Watkins Maps and Whitchurch Tithe Map)

Isaac Ballinger
John Ballinger
Percy Ballinger
Thomas Ballinger
William Ballinger

I hope i am not confusing the search.

Hi

The following may be the line you are chasing.
Some sources from Ancestry Family Trees and some from FOD Parish records transcriptions.

Edward Ballinger Baptised 28th April 1776 in Llangarron Parish Herefordshire
He married Ann Hook 9th February 1801 at Goodrich
She died 7th November 1814 Goodrich.
He then married Diana Davies 10th May 1815 at Goodrich. (Family name recorded as Ballingham. ? He was a widower)
Their Children baptised at Goodrich :-
1821 Prudence
1823 Charlotte
1825 John
1826 Harriotte
1828 George.
In the above records he was shown as a barge man living at Copped Wood, (I believe it is now known at Coppett Hill and was a possession of the Manor of Goodrich).

Edwards parents could have been :-
John Ballinger (1743-1798)
Elizabeth Bessex (1751-1799)
Married 14th Dec 1768 at Dixton Newton Hereford (England Select Marriages 1538-1973)

Some further information on John Ballinger from Tasmanian Convict Records.
From Indents of convicts 1824-1853
Five Feet tall.
Surgeons report states he is well balanced.

From Conduct record.
15 months at Port Esperance Probation Station.
Freedom Certificate 17th August 1852.

From 1846 Convict Muster.
Probation Dover. (Dover Convict Probation Station reportedly began after closure of Port Esperance Probation Station in 1845-1847.
It is located on Port Esperance 81km South West of Hobart.
It is the most Southerly Town of significance in Australia and the last place to buy petrol and supplies.
There are three islands off the coast from Dover called Faith, Hope and Charity. Faith Island has convict graves on it from the early days)
Main Industry for the convicts was timber splitting and felling..
Probable main recreational pastime for the convicts would have been trying to keep warm.

From Trove Historical Newspapers (Free Website). Launceston Examiner of 16th June 1847 (Tasmanian Newspapers often carried lists of convicts, followed by the name of the ship on which they arrived, and details such as Pardon being granted or obtaining of Certificate of Freedom)
On 11 Th June 1849, John Ballinger was granted Ticket of Leave.
