PARLOR/JORDAN (reply)

I have been researching the Parlors and believe that John Parlor (1770) married twice. First to Elizabeth Gardiner and then, after her death, to Anne Bays.

Year 1798
Month Oct
Day 18
Surname PARLO

In the record of John's marriage to Anne he is a "batchelor" and that does sew a seed of doubt but my theory does explain why John & Ann appear together on the 1841 census.

PARLOR/JORDAN/COOK (reply)

Again many thanks. After a careful re-read I think it really looks that Ann in the 1841 Census was John's wife and that there was a ten years disparity between their ages. I concur with your argument on names. I have noticed before baby girls baptised with quite fancy names revert to Ann in later censuses etc.I even have a theory that sisters sometimes swapped them.

Thank you again for all the leads you have given me here. Gaps in records when you get back to the 18th century always lead to areas of doubts and speculations. All my strands seem to lead to Meeks and Jordans.

PARLOR (reply)

Thank you for your reference to a previous thread which has led me to further queries. I have noticed that in the 1841 Census John Parlor is living with Ann Parlor who is recorded as ten years older than him. His wife would have appeared to have been Elizabeth Jordan who he married in 1797. Could Ann have been a sister?

In the 1851 Census John appears to be living with the Roberts family as "father-in-law". William Roberts was the cordwinder of Joys Green. In the census his wife Elizabeth, presumably John's daughter, is recorded as "a tinker". Gypsy? Any ideas?

The question of being on the census twice has been discussed on this forum, and proven to happen.

PARLOR - 1841 census (reply)

I must thank everyone who has responded with such wonderful information. I did not expect anyone to have the certificate. Brilliant! I now feel very secure on this marriage. The problem results to some extent on the spelling on names. Both Tryphena and Parlor are open to creative spelling.

To the last respondent I believe she appears in the 1841 census twice. The 1841 record quoted must, I believe, show her staying with her grandparents in Moorwood.I had originally thought her to have been an only child. However, I believe her father also included her on his return so she is recorded twice. I don't suppose anyone could write so the record must have been oral. I wonder whether this was a common error in the 1841 census?

Marriage of William Morgan and Tryphena Parlor 1846

The marriage of the above appears in the Free BMDs as having taken place within the Monmouth Registration District in September 1846. I have been unable to locate the marriage in the parish records on this site. It is likely that the marriage was in a non-conformist chapel.

Have all the non-conformist registers transcribed? Are there any known gaps around 1846? Would be grateful for any help.

Thanks in anticipation.
