It may be the surname Williams was a family name.

My x Grandad William Wickenden born 1843 in Gloucestershire, his Mother’s maiden name was Green

He was a Miller and got into debt, on one Census, he is living with his Son, in Blakeney, Forest of Dean, then moved to Swindon, Wiltshire to work as a labourer for the Great Western Railways.

Probably to hide his identity, on two census returns he and his Wife’s surname is GREEN and his Son and my Grandson are listed as Wickenden, living with him and are classed as lodgers.

His death certificate gives his correct surname.

Some people were scared of being found and thought census returns would be used to find them. Also alias surnames were common in Gloucestershire, my paternal line had alias as surnames.

Thank you for the message. I will try the apprenticeships. My husband has done his DNA but I think it is too far back to give any conclusive results.
His children were Edward Whittington Williams and Sarah Whittington Williams.

If you Google

National Archives Apprentice Records —.

…..

Apprentices and Masters - The National Archives …

You may find him, however, it does state that there were informal indentures with fathers often teaching sons and nephews with common trades such as weaving etc. and Edward was a weaver of carpets.

Look at the names he gave his children, his father’s name would more often than not used.

Look for other Whittington weavers and of course DNA.

My x Grandad in around 1871 just after my Grandad was born, left his Wife and family in Bristol, got on a boat to Chile and never returned. Through DNA and documents, we’ve discovered he had children with a local woman in Santiago, then married another lady. He did name a Son after one of his brothers and a daughter after his Wife he deserted! So Christian names were and are still relevant.

Yes that is the correct Old Bailey record. He is before the courts in December of the same year and found guilty. He is then transported to Australia.
Do you know where I could access apprenticeship records. Ancestry has some however he is not on their data base. His native place was Gloucestershire. He may of moved to London to work and done his apprenticeship there.

The Proceedings of the Old Bailey London Criminal Court 1674-1913 are on line.

Is this the trial? Year 1818

Edward Whittington, Samuel Solomon and William Haines, were indicted for stealing on the 25th September, from the person of Andrew Anderson one Il. Ban note, his property,

The prosecutor not appearing, the prisoners were Acquitted.

Second Middlesex Jury, before Mr Recorder.

…..

One would assume Edward aged about 15/ 18 years would have served an Apprenticeship, or still an Apprentice.
May be there are Apprenticeship records.

What names did Edward give his children, as there is normally a naming pattern, ie Father, Mother, siblings etc.

My husband has a possible ancestor in Edward Whittington, baptised in Bicknor English in 1803. His parents were John and Ann.

His Edward Whittington was charged with stealing in Sept 1818. His Old Bailey record says he was born c 1800 in Gloucestershire. He was a carpet manufacturer. In December 1818 he was again charged with stealing. He used the name Edward Williams, born Gloucestershire c 1800, carpet maker.
I haven't found any other Edwards born around this period.
I did find a Thomas Whittington bc 1795 in some court records on Ancestry. He was found not guilty.

Any help to confirm or eliminate Edward would be appreciated.
Regards

Hilary

Thomas did as you say marry Mary, one daughter Ann Selina 1860/1862. Richard 1829 had 8 children with Ann Whittington nee Whittington, Joseph 1831 had 12 children with my 6th cousin 3 times removed Lydia Mason 1831

The grandchildren you mention are the children of Harriett Whittington 1832, daughter of Thomas Whittington & Anne Brown. Harriett had 3 children John Frederick 1851 who went on to marry my 3rd cousin 4 times removed Elizabeth Read, Caroline 1854/1884 and Priscilla 1854/1864. I believe the father could be a Thomas Jones. Harriett went on to marry William Colwell 1831 in 1856, they had 3 children Albert Henry William 1856/1939 who married Mary Ann Price Gore - 9 children. William Colwell & Harriett also had a daughter Julia 1859 who kept up the family tradition and had 3 illegitimate children Hubert Frederick Colwell 15 Feb 1879, Osborne William Colwell 1881 & Alice Lavinia Beatrice Colwell 1889.

Hi
Who are the grandchildren living with Ann Whittington in 1871 - any idea? They don't belong to Joseph or Richard, do they belong to Thomas (b abt 1835)? I found he married someone called Mary and they had a daughter called Ann Selina (1860-1862) but do not know any more of them after 1861.

Thanks, Hilary

Thomas WHITTINGTON 1795 ish English Bicknor (reply)

Funny how you find out things by accident, your post took me back to something I had meant to check out regarding Whittingham's in Walford. I have never been able to connect a James Beach who married Sarah Whittingham in Walford 1815 directly to my family, but he is obviously linked as he was born Dixton, Monmouth, about 1800, plus in 1849 Samuel Beach married Caroline William's in Walford, and Caroline's father is said to be William Whittingham, so Caroline was Sarah Whittingham's younger half sister, or probably more likely the daughter of her brother. The following year Samuel Beach's cousin Isaac Beach married Comfort James in Walford. Comfort's mother was Margaret Beach, but they all live in Garway, the only connection they have to Walford is James Beach. James and Sarah had no children so they probably remained connected to family via involvement in these marriages, James must be an uncle. Why am I telling you all this?...somebody might be interested....

Maps of Bicknor, Lydbrook & Walford areas. (reply)

Hi Gilly,
you may find the Maps section on this site usefull, particularly this one
http://www.forest-of-dean.net/parish_records/php/parish_map.php

I grewup in the eastern Forest and thought I had a decent knowledge of the area, cycled and driven quite a lot of it too. Sadly this and my best O level grade (Geography) didnt help in my FH researches particularly for my Lydbrook line t'other side of Ruardean Hill. This last year I've discovered so much new about the local parishes, village locations, etc etc, you just don't get the whole story driving around. This site's maps plus the excellent Genuki site have been a Godsend. Good luck !

Have a good look around this site.

Lydbrook and Walford are 4 miles apart.

Although I know roughly how far apart they are, I have used Microsoft Autoroute to establish this exactly, but if you want to find the distance between places use Google.

You will find that a lot of marriages took place in Walford during a period when the vicar of Ruardean lived there. I have found this noted on the Parish Records for Ruardean.

Thanks for the info. I have Henry Whittington on my tree as my great great grandfather - on most Census says born Lydbrook or Newland, Born 1821 to Thomas and Hannah whittingham (FOD Records) Marriage of Thomas and Hannah 1820 Parish Chapel Newland birth f Henry Lidbrook Parish Chapel of Drybrook - are these places near Walford? (marriage to Ann Hussey) Henry named his first child Hannah hence my thinking that his mum was Hannah. (Census relating to Henry 1841 - 1881 Aberystruth Monmouthshire)
