St Johns Cinderford (reply)

I am still unable to find a way to locate the graves in the Cinderford St. John graveyard -or whether they are still visible. I don't find anything under the memorandum part of the burial records for James or Martha Wood or for Harriet Wood. The links you sent me are to the Forum discussion of Cinderford St John but apply to what the items under memorandum mean? I find nothing under the memorandum space. Perhaps I will have better luck at the graveyard in Awre Saint Andrews where Samuel and Mary Hewlett are buried or at the Blakeney Tabernacle where William Wood is buried. Lynn

The Verger / Churchwarden may be able to help...

WOOD/DREW (reply)

Thanks, I see the 9 James Wood wills and the East Dean one in 1850. My James Wood died in Jul and the index says the will is dated Oct so unless that is the probate date it isn't my James. I would love it to be his father, but as he would be well over 100 in 1850 I don't think that likely. I will try to take a look at the actual will in Salt Lake City this Oct, if they have it on microfilm, and see if perchance it is William's brother, James. I am confused by Cinderford's churches. I followed the link you sent on Cinderford Baptist church but didn't find anything but the history. I was hoping for a record to graves. Both James WOOD [bur. 30 Jul 1850] and his wife, Martha MASON WOOD [bur. 20 Nov 1861]were buried "Cinderford St. John" by J. G. Smythies. I see online a graveyard attached to Cinderford Baptist Chapel. Is that what is meant? Is there a graveyard attached to St John the Evangelist, Cinderford? Their children were non conformist so I have doubted they were buried at St. John the Evangelist. Do either of these churches have a list of those buried there? Lynn

JAMES WOOD 1765 - 1850 Stapledge Lodge (reply)

Your post mentions a William WOOD as a possible brother to James [born 14/15 Jun 1766], the father of William WOOD [m. 1827, d.1877]. James had siblings born in Little Dean as he was. Is Flaxley nearby --near enough for William born in 1765 in Flaxley to be an older brother to James?

Yes probably within a 2 mile radius

Also in the 1861 census in the Parish of East Dean where the Drew's were living is what looks like L. D. Hill - Little Dean Hill?? - is there such a place?

Yes

The question still remains - how to prove that the James WOOD who married Martha MASON is the one who was baptized 14/15 Jun 1766, son of James and Elizabeth.

Balance of probabilities looking good, absolute proof is often hard to establish

JAMES WOOD 1765 - 1850 Stapledge Lodge (reply)

Thank you for your swift reply. I hadn't found Martha Wood in the 1861 census. Actually I had never looked since she died in 1861 --- but, now I see, not until months after the census was taken. Thanks to you I see her living with her youngest daughter, Mary An [sic] Drew. My husband and I will be coming to the Forest of Dean for the first time this August so only know the area from afar. Also in the 1861 census in the Parish of East Dean where the Drew's were living is what looks like L. D. Hill - Little Dean Hill?? - is there such a place? Anthony and Susannah COOPER as witnesses along with William WOOD to the marriage of James Wood and Martha MASON are still a mystery to me. I don't know anything about Martha MASON yet so assume they must be relations of hers. The question still remains - how to prove that the James WOOD who married Martha MASON is the one who was baptized 14/15 Jun 1766, son of James and Elizabeth. Lynn

JAMES WOOD,married 1789, Little Dean; d.1850 Stapledge Lodge

Searching for the parents of James WOOD, who married Martha MASON, 13 Dec 1789, and died 30 Jul 1850. There is a baptism of a James WOOD on 15 Jun 1766, son of Jam[sic] and Elizabeth WOOD in Little Dean. This same couple baptized a Sarah the 21 Feb 1768 and an Ann the 19 Nov 1769 also in Little Dean. How can I determine if this is my James WOOD? The James WOOD whose parents I seek was a Keeper [Woodward/woodreve] of the Forest of Dean as was his son, William. Both James and William lived at Stapledge Lodge. This is the William WOOD who married first to Harriot EVANS in 18 Aug 1827 and second to Mary by 1851. William WOOD died in 1877.Thank you for any help you might be able to give. Lynn
