Old Engine (reply)

Old Engine is an area in the Forest, near Steam Mills north of Cinderford

Old Coal mine called Old Engine Colliery near Bennett's Mill - this mill was a steam powered corn mill, which is thought to be why the area is now known as Steam Mills...

In 1856 the Beerhouse was called Old Engine after the colliery . by 1878 the Old Engine Inn was in new premises as the Newtown of Steam Mills developed.

http://www.old-maps.co.uk/

< and you will find the Old Engine Brook and Inn there as well>

George ABELL 1851 Painswick Inn keeper (reply)

Old Engine, East Dean, would this be refering to a Ale House or Inn or is it simply a district of the Forest. I note from my family records that George's last child Sarah Abell b 24 February 1856, was living at Old Engine, East Dean, Glous. Possibly born there. Does it still exist?

George ABELL 1852 Painswick -> Penyard (reply)

WOW! thanks that was quick, I really appreciate the work you have done much of which I had already had on file however you have provided me with some new information, for that I thank you. I am really trying to find out if George ABELL had an Inn, there are some scant notes with my family tree that suggest that he was an Inn Keeper circa 1850. Unfortunately no location or Inn name. Again Many thanks.
