re William WOOD, Cinderford Blacksmith c1900 (reply)

Hi again Neil, I hope our findings have been of some interest to you. Unfortunately I cannot yet find any references to Ewart Wood by searching the old newspapers via the BNA & Welsh Newspapers sites. However don't forget Cinderford's own "Dean Forest Mercury" isn't available online; if possible Neil I recommend you visit Cinderford library to view their microfich archives, see http://forum.forest-of-dean.net/index.php?id=34751

However I can give some more information re the William Wood, Cinderford Blacksmith of my previous post;

Gloucester Citizen - Saturday 23 August 1902

"CINDERFORD.
A Blacksmith's Affairs.
The summary of the statement of affairs of William Wood, of High-street, Cinderford, Gloucestershire, blacksmith, who has been on his own petition adjudged bankrupt, shows the sum of £210 1s. 11d. owing to 22 unsecured creditors, one creditor for £70 14s. 1d. holding security estimated to be the value of £20, leaving £50 14s. 1d. to rank, two creditors for rent £5, and two creditors for rates and wages payable in full, 4s. 11d. The assets as estimated by the debtor consist stock-in-trade, trade fixtures, fittings, utensils, etc., and furniture, £50. and 21 good book debts £11 18s. 4d., making a total of £61 18s. 4d., and after deducting £10 4s. 11d. for distrainable rent and preferential rates and wages, of £209 2s. 7d. shown. The cause of failure alleged by debtor is " want of capital."

Gloucestershire Chronicle - Saturday 22 November 1902

"A blacksmith's failure.
William Wood, smith aud ironmonger, of Cinderford, presented himself for his adjourned examination. — The Registrar said answers debtor gave the last hearing were most unsatisfactory, and the case was adjourned in order that he might refresh his memory and make up his mind what he was going to say. If his answers this time were not satisfactory to the Court, the case would be again adjourned.— ln reply to tbe Official Receiver, debtor said he had failed 25 years ago, and again five years later. At tbe first failure he owed about £3OO, and paid a composition of 10s. in the £, and the second failure his debts were £450, and he paid 4s.6d. in the £. His failures been caused by a fire 25 years ago, which destroyed his premises. At the second failure he had borrowed £lOO from his mother-in-law, since dead, and had not paid that back, but had paid the interest up to two years ago. — ln answer to the Registrar, bankrupt apologised for saying at the previous Court that the notes of tbe preliminary examinations were not read over to him, and was sorry he had made a mistake. — The examination was closed."

========================================================

As said earlier, I don't know if this William is linked to Ewart's family, altho it does seem possible at first glance, it would be interesting to know for sure if they are related.

Assuming my earlier suggestion for his marriage is correct, and he did marry Miriam Chivers in 1859, then this is her Burial;

Ewart (Tommy)WOOD born c1891 Ruspidge - 1978 Littledean (reply)

Ewart [Tommy] Wood was our blacksmith for many years and became an 'adopted' member of our family. He and Mrs Wood and their dog Chum spent a lot of time with us after Tommy retired. All our family occasions e.g weddings, christenings etc. always included Granny and Grampy Wood, as our children called them. I have photos of most of these 'get togethers'.

Ewart (Tommy)WOOD; why a Blacksmith ?. (reply)

Re "keep searching", by complete and lucky coincidence while answering another forum post I spotted a name on a Trade Directory that I must followup as a likely new member of my mother's tree !.

AND, on that very same 1868 Directory is a "William Wood, blacksmith" at Bilson Woodside, ie St John's/Ruspidge end of Cinderford !.

Do you have a William in your tree ? Could he have been a link to Ewart's future blacksmith career, an Uncle perhaps ??.

Ewart (Tommy)WOOD; WW1 Service, Royal Horse Artillery. (reply)

Well spotted Norman, that makes complete sense. Hopefully Ewart was able to stay a little way back from the frontline compared to the gun teams themselves, but still a very hard and dangerous task of course !. Despite this the RHA were known as the "Donkey Wallopers" by the other Royal Artillery units !
You'll probably have seen the same WW1 vintage 13 pounder guns being used for Ceremonial duties such as Queen's Birthday salutes, parades, etc, they're at Woolwich Barracks, London, as is the excellent Firepower museum.
http://firepower.org.uk/family-history/

Excellent WW1 period films of the RHA here

Just searched FindMyPast, sadly but not unusually no Service Records/Pension Records.
Unlike Ancestry, they have him as 123452 (not 128452?) and rank Driver?, his Medal Card is available from the National Archives site; hope this link works for you too

======

Do hope this helps you build up a picture of Ewart's life. I realise you'd like to know more, the same applies to most of us, but keep looking as we're always finding out new things about our kin. Compared to what you seemed to know when you first posted, methinks we're doing well, just never stop searching.

Ewart (Tommy)WOOD; WW1 Service ? (reply)

Like you I wondered if Tommy served during WW1, altho an experienced miner with blacksmith skills would equally have been very desirable for his employers to keep at the pit ?.
Eitherway, I cannot yet find him in in uniform, altho there are a great many "Tom Wood"s to browse thro. Have you also looked for military records ?

Having spent an hour trying to find this on Ancestry, searching various family members etc, it took FindMyPast abt 1 minute to succeed !
Given the easily-read census form, I cannot understand why there would be any problem at all, unless perhaps Ancestry simply don't have this particular sheet of the Census in their database.
Ah well....

I recall you told me this in the past, that explains your use of the "GR" then, all makes sense now. Sorry, have had a bit of a crazy-mixedup day here, all in a tizz !

Yes agree re the Ancestry transcriptions, as we've discussed on the forum in the past - I've seen some absolute corkers. In fact I'd forgotten I currently have a FindMyPast free-trial subscription, I need to set them some challenges and see how they perform.

ps please find Nora on the 1901, thanks ! I'm also puzzled why I cannot find any sign of Samuel Edwards' 1906 Marriage on the usual websites (PRs, FreeBMD, GlosBMD). Not disputing it happened, just don't like unanswered puzzles !

Ewart (Tommy)WOOD born c1891 Ruspidge - 1978 Littledean (reply)

Hi Jefff,

I tend to use Genes Reunited rather than Ancestry for census searches. I don’t know if it’s the way I use it but Ancestry sometimes seems to have a habit of hiding what ought to be obvious. However, in this case they have wrongly transcribed him as Tom Ewart EDWARDS under which name he comes top of the list.

MILLSOME Nora Mary, born 1890 at Caversham Oxfordshire (reply)

Hi Norman,
thanks for the update, an interesting story by the looks of it, Reading was a fair way to cycle in those days, do you know why he took this journey ?

Ref Nora, looks like she was born abt 10 miles downstream of Reading at Henley on Thames, from FreeBMD;

Then again, I see Henley Registration District includes Caversham, I was there last month, it's just north of Reading town centre/railway station and right on the Thames.
http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/henley.html

Similarly Henley District includes Checkendon, which is northwest of Caversham & Reading, and in the general direction of Newnham etc.

I cannot find Nora, or her parents, on the 1901 Census yet, anyone else please ?.
(Thought I'd found Nora, conveniently working in service in Cheltenham, but she is a different Nora Mary Milsom born Addlestone, Surrey !)
Similarly cannot find youngest daugher Kathleen.

FreeBMD shows her middle name is Essex, not "Victor" as per Ancestry 1911 Transcription !
Kathleen Essex Millsome didn't marry, she died in Reading area in 1981.

Thanks Mike, well spotted !

Please, do you use Ancestry too, or what ?.

Curious how I didn't spot him, I'd have thought the name Ewart would be easy to spot !
(perhaps it was the distraction of my listening to the thrashing down-under !!)

Ewart (Tommy)WOOD born c1891 Ruspidge - 1978 Littledean (reply)

Thanks for replies and interest in my search.
I have made some progress too
I realise Ewart was not born in 1891 but following the arrival of his birth certificate, know he was born at Ruspidge on 17 February 1893 (The registrar spelt it as RESPAGE) . Mother was Florence WOOD born about 1871, she married Samuel EDWARDS in 1906, hence Ewart's presence as a step son in the census.
Other progress includes his marriage in 1922 at Reading to Nora Mary MILLSOME.
In the 1911 census she was living at home and a Housemaid. I know from local stories that Ewart, probably now known as Tommy WOOD cycled from Cinderford to Reading using the ferry at Newnham. I can only deduce that Tommy met Norah during WW1 service since I can't find her in Gloucestershire. Nora died in 1867 living at Mannings Well Littledean and is buried at Littledean.
Would still like to know more it there's more to tell.
Regards
NormanE

NormanE

Hi Norman,
please do you have any more detailed information ?.
At first glance reading your query I took it that you knew the main dates etc, however I can only find this one Record which slightly contradicts your post, or perhaps you've made a typo error ?. This record is confirmed by FreeBMD, the Birth was registered Jan/Feb/March Qtr of 1893.

From GlosBMD;

Birth Details

Searching the Census' seems to draw blanks for this Ewart Wood.
Could he have been known as Tommy as a child, where/how does this name fit in ?
Thanks, Jeff.

Searching the Census' for Thomas does give this entry that fits his birth year/place.

I've been unable to find Ewart/Tommy in the 1911 Census.
