Hi Mike,
thanks for confirming that I may have got the right marriage in Stepney. As you say no real proof, but I searched high n low and found nothing better. Plus and as I posted earlier Stepney is only just across the Thames from Rotherhithe where some of their children were baptised. I didnt think to look for Sarah Adams in Coleford but that does seem an excellent fit in every respect, and a handy 21 years before her marriage.

Despite their seeming to be not too many FOX PRs in the FoD database, there are quite a few in the Coleford area and some are pre 1800, so hopefully this tree can be taken back quite a way.

This is the entry from GRO online index which gives us age at death:

This suggests a good match.

Thomas Fox was a Widower at the time of the 1861 Census and he left a Will. This is from Probate Register:

Effects under £20. Grant dated 7 October 1861
The Will of Thomas Fox late of Littledean Lane End in West Dean in the County of Gloucester Carpenter deceased who died 21 August 1861 at Littledean Lane End aforesaid was proved at Gloucester by the oath of George Fox of Littledean Lane End aforesaid Carpenter the son and the sole Executor.

Thank you so much for all of this - very much appreciated. I know this is a bit of a longshot but this is my train of thought. Thomas Fox's mother was a Jane Hawkins. who is shown having a daughter called Sarah b 1776 in Coleford. Jane had a sister b.1747 Newland, called Mary. I found the following entry. I may be way off mark but is it possible that Sarah 'Fox' is Sarah 'Hawkins' b 1779, the daughter of Mary?

Indeed, continued searching for "Thomas & Sarah FOX" on FamilySearch shows a few such couples and their families in the east London parts of Surrey (Bermondsey, Lambeth, etc), BUT sadly still no definite signs of our couples marriage..

This is the most likely possible Marriage that I've seen for our couple, when using FamilySearch to search in London, Glos, Monmouthshire, Herefordshire, but of course there's lot of other places in between... What does seem certain is they were settled in Coalway area by 1807 when Eleanor was baptised.

I have never before heard of a Lane End at Littledean, which is in EAST Dean, nr Cinderford. However I now find that there was indeed a Littledean Lane End near Broadwell, West Dean, which perfectly fits our family.

I presume that belief is based upon the Census info, which can sometimes be wrong ?

Apart from the records I've posted, assuming they're correct of course, do you have any more records that may guide us ?.

I see there are other (older) Thomas and Sarah FOXs in the Coleford area c1800 as well as ours, have you looked to try and build a wider tree ? Maybe some clues there ??

for example, clearly not "our" Sarah, but ??;

I expect you probably already have the following records, but included for completeness, plus of course they may give some more clues eg does Sarah end her days living with one of her children, and does that Census record specify her birthplace ??

Have tried hard to find further records for Mary anne / Marianne but to no avail. I wonder if her reported birth in Rotherhithe Surrey c1803 is significant, could that have been where her parents were married and perhaps her mother Sarah's home area, maybe her father was a jobbing carpenter at the Rotherhithe docks ??? FreeBMD shows a few ladies if that name being married in our general area after 1851, but are they relevant...

Trying to establish the maiden name of Sarah Fox, married to Thomas Fox and mother to Marianne, George, Elizabeth and Elinor Fox. I can find Sarah in the census for 1841 and 1851 but nothing beyond that. So queries are for Sarah 1)Maiden Name 2)Date of Marriage 3} Date of Death. Any help gratefully received. Thank you.
