The Albert Inn, Joyford (reply)

I went there today and found it as shown on the map I linked to. To find it, go down Joyford Hill to the point where Bicknor Street joins it. Then walk along the narrow lane immediately opposite Bicknor Street. I only went as far as the gate into the property. You'll probably need to go right onto the property to see the building properly.

The Albert Inn, Joyford (reply)

Cannot give a direct link but the Albert has a fairly detailed page on the brilliant GlosPubs website, just search "Joyford" and you'll soon find it.
http://www.gloucestershirepubs.co.uk/AllGlosPubsDatabase/AllGlosPubs_view.php

The site shows the pub was in the hands of the Howells family for several years, and other families too of course. It's nice to see that the pub, which closed in 1952 and now appears to be a very desirable home, is still called Albertin.
https://www.houser.co.uk/albertin,-joyford,-coleford-gl16-7ar-p16448555

Heather Hurley's excellent book "Pubs of the Royal FoD" calls the Albert "a beerhouse, owned and occupied by Charlotte Harrison from 1879 # until the end of the century, known as the Albert, which suggests an earlier establishment of at least 1861 when the Prince died."

Prince Albert also visited the nearby Speech House in 1861, he didn't die until December 14th and had been performing many of Victoria's Royal duties and tours after her mother died in March 1861. The tree he planted was still opposite the Speech House when I was there a few years back, I hope it still is.

# The Morris & Co. Commercial Directory & Gazetteer of West Dean 1876 includes
"HARRISON Mrs. Charlotte, beer retailer, Joyford"
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~cbennett/westdean1876.htm

As does the Kelly's Post Office Directory of West Dean 1870
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~cbennett/westdean1870.htm

And therefore so does the 1871 Census, which shows Charlotte aged 45, "beerhouse keeper" and head of the household with 2 daughters, at the "Albert Inn, Joyford". I cannot find any other inns/beerhouses in Joyford in the 1871 Census.

The 1861 has Charlotte living in Joyford, wife of William, "retired farmer", no mention of them being at a pub.
Searching all of Joyford in 1861 Census I cannot find any pubs/inns/beerhouses mentioned by their name, the only one listed is kept by a Shadrach Hughes, "coalminer & innkeeper", altho in later Census he's only listed as a coalminer etc.

The Albert Inn, Joyford (reply)

Hi

I believe the Inn was located between Belmont Lane and Joyford Hill, south of the intersection with Bicknor Street and Wellmeadow Lane.
Looking at Google Earth, I believe the building is still standing.
I don't have any familiarity with the area whatsoever as I have located the Inn from Brisbane Australia,(which never ceases to amaze me) thanks to a website provided kindly by one of the Forum's more knowledgable users.
I have taken a screen cap of a historical map side by side with the satellite view which i can send you if I had your email address or if I knew how to attach it, I may be able to do it through this site.
Regards

The Albert Inn, Joyford

Can anyone tell me anything about the history of The Albert Inn in Joyford, and where it was/is in Joyford please. I note from your site that inquests were often held there.

I have found it in the 1939 Register, which states that Emily Howells was the licensee. But cannot find it in the current telphone directory for the area.

Many thanks, Daffodil
