Here is the index entry for their marriage in NZ, thus confirming the spelling of Rond:

1886/3149 Elizabeth Rond William John Blunt

There is a death index entry for an Elizabeth Blunt as well:
1927/8027 Blunt Elizabeth 51Y
but that age would have given this Elizabeth a birth date of 1876, making her 10 years of age at her wedding in 1886. Either there is another Elizabeth Blunt, or her age is wrongly recorded.

William John BLUNT 1858 Clearwell (reply)

Sorry folks, the OP posted to a NZ group originally, and later to this FoD forum on the recommendation of someone on the NZ group.

He said in his post to the NZ group:
He married an Elizabeth ROUD in the 15th December of
that year at the age of 29/30 in Philipstown which was/is a suburb of
Christchurch.

IN 1889 Elizabeth gave birth to a son, my grandfather (also William John
BLUNT) in Kaikoura.

I would also be interested in the arrival of Elizabeth ROUD prior to 1887.

He did not include this in his post to this forum, but stupidly I posted my responses on both Blunt and Roud to the FoD group, when there is no evidence that Elizabeth Roud had any connection to the Forest except her NZ marriage to a FoD descendant. I have found a possible death record for her in NZ in 1890, but no other details - and it is spelled Roud as the OP said.

My apologies. Thank you Jefff for your compliments regarding my Blunt post, and apologies for taking you astray with the Roud post. However, it looks like you may have found her family!

And yes, deaths were all too common on these voyages to the uttermost ends of the earth - particularly amongst the children.

William John BLUNT 1858 Clearwell (reply)

Hi John, great research there wrt your "possibility" (methinks you sell yerself short) of the Blunt's ship, interesting stuff indeed. The way they nonchalantly mention "four deaths" suggest that to be the norm !

The GB surname website doesn't recognise Ronde but does Rondel and it originates from Newport SW area. The surname Roud is an Asian "import" centred on Southampton so perhaps less likely.
http://gbnames.publicprofiler.org/Map.aspx?name=RONDEL&year=1881&altyear=1998&a...

HOWEVER, that said searching FreeBMD does show numerous Rouds including likely hits for George Sr and the children. It also shows the following marriage:

Surname First name(s) District Vol Page
Marriages Mar 1865 (>99%)
Rance Elizabeth Hartley W. 2c 239
Roud Geord Hartley W. 2c 239
Roud George Hartley W. 2c 239
(Hartley Wintney is on A30, Hampshire, midway between London and Southampton, and on the main railway line from London to Salisbury & Southampton)

Births Mar 1845
Roud George Romsey VII 173 mims
ROUD George Romsey VII 173 GrayCee
ROUD George Romsey VII 173 golfnut
(Romsey is just north of Southampton)

Births Dec 1844
RANCE Elizabeth Alverstoke VII 31 hoary
(Alverstoke is in southernmost Hampshire nr Gosport/Portsmouth)

Births Sep 1864
Roud George Alderbury 5a 165
(Alderbury is on Wilts/Hants border nr Salisbury, on the A30)

Births Dec 1866 (>99%)
Roud Mary A S. Stoneham 2c 61
(Stoneham is in southernmost Hampshire near Southampton)

Births Dec 1867 (>99%)
Roud Edwin Staines 3a 10
(There are NO Edmund Roud/Rond/Ronde on FreeBMD.
Staines is on the Thames and A30 midway twixt London & north Hants)

Births Dec 1869
ROUD Elizabeth. Cookham 2c 397 PhilStanger
(Cookham is also on the Thames a few miles upstream/West from Staines)

The family is clearly moving around a lot. I wonder if this is due to George Senior's ag-labourer work being hard-to-find despite Hampshire being an agricultural county, perhaps instigating their move to NZ in 1870 ?.

Echunga
Ship: 1000 tons
Surgeon Superintendent:
Sailed London 2nd September 1862 - arrived Lyttelton 24th December 1862
The Echunga was a large ship of 1000 tons, but she was not a clipper, her record passage to New Zealand being 103 days to Lyttleton. This was her first voyage out. She sailed from London on the 10th September, 1862, with 332 immigrants, for Timaru and Lyttleton, and arrived at the latter port on the ssnd December. At Timaru it was discovered that no provision had been made for their reception, although the Government knew as far back as May that a large batch of immigrants would arrive about that time. The barracks, which should have been ready, were only just started. When the first batch of passengers landed, in heavy rain, they found men preparing to erect some tents, and the voyagers had to lay down and rest on the grass, as not even straw had been provided. The consequence was that a large number refused to go ashore, and demanded to be taken to Lyttleton, as their contract tickets were made out for Canterbury, and did not bind them to land at Timaru. Four deaths occurred during the voyage.

William John BLUNT 1858 Clearwell (reply)

Hi Paul,
As Slowhands has listed yes indeed your ancestors were included in the Census Returns. As far as I'm aware everyone in the country, residents and foreign visitors, were included, regardless of village size so even included sailors in ships in ports and so on. The Census Returns are not immediately accessible on this FoD FH site, although many contributors particularly kindly and incorrectly named Slowhands are likely to provide them for you. This information is largely kept by the large subscription websites. However this website does have a vast database of individual Parish Records covering the whole area including Clearwell/Newland etc. This is easily searched and will provide you with many Records of your ancestors which will eventually allow you to piece-together families even without the Census Returns.

eg searching the name Blunt within Clearwell Parish, gives the following two PRs:

Record_ID: 115912
Entry_Number: 457
Year: 1853
Month: Sep
Day: 11
Parents_Surname: BLUNT
Notes:
Register_Reference: 8811
Page_Number: 58
Parish_Chapel: Clearwell
Soundex: B453

and:

Record_ID: 115979
Entry_Number: 524
Year: 1856
Month: May
Day: 25
Parents_Surname: BLUNT
Child_Forenames: Eliza
Fathers_Forenames: William
Mothers_Forenames: Ann
Mothers_Surname:
Page_Number: 66
Parish_Chapel: Clearwell
Soundex: B453

which are William John's sisters. Sadly there isn't a direct record for him, however these still give usefull information re his parents.

Searching the database again but without specifying the Parish gives 332 Parish Records for the surname Blunt !. The earliest being in 1616 within English Bicknor Parish, so only a few miles from Clearwell. Interestingly this PR is for the daughter of another John Blunt, there are several John & William Blunts within the PRs which I'm sure you will find of interest.

Record_ID: 109369
Entry_Number:
Year: 1616
Month: Feb
Day: 9
Parents_Surname: BLUNT
Child_Forenames: Susanna
Fathers_Forenames: John
Mothers_Forenames:
Residence:
Occupation:
Officiating_Minister:
Register_Reference: P138 IN 1/1
Page_Number: 56
Parish_Chapel: English Bicknor
Soundex: B453

Back to finding more about William John's parents, William and Ann, try searching the database for all William Blunts around the year say 1850 +/- 10 years. This gives only 8 PRs to look at, quickly giving the following. As you probably know, the Marriage Record is often most useful, giving occupations, places of residence, parents names and also witnesses names, often family members. However given ages need taking with a pinch of salt, although here we just know the couple are considered adult.

And so on backwards or forwards in time....

Also don't forget the site also has a huge amount of other interesting information, be it Historical Documents such as Wills, old maps which you'll find usefull in placing Parishes within the area, photographs and such like. Also don't forget the Forum itself is also entirely searchable, so you may find others have already researched part of your tree.

Re the maps see
http://www.forest-of-dean.net/joomla/the-forest-of-dean/maps-of-the-forest

and particularly "Early Map of Parishes"
Subject: [FoD] BLUNT pre 1887

Hello listers,
I am not sure whether I am on the correct list for the following query -
please let me know if I have erred.

My great-grandfather William John BLUNT, according to a birth certificate
I
have here of the birth of his son, was born in Clearwell, Gloustershire.
W.J
was married in 1887 in New Zealand therefore arrived in the country prior
to
this time.

My questions are:-
Are census records available (on line) for 1861, 1871 and 1881 and, if
so, would they cover this small villiage (as it probably was then) so I
can
trace his and his family's movements during these years?
What other records would be available and useful in my quest?

Thanking anyone for their contribution

Regards
Paul Darrall in Hamilton, New Zealand.
