Thank you all so much for all this really useful and interesting information. It will all take a while to sort through what is relevant and digest it, so many many thanks to you all, particularly you Jeff. We will probably go quiet for a while now as it will take some time before we can take it forward.

We had found lots of details re Thomas Dobson 1814 onwards but seemed to be hitting rather a brick wall with his forebears, till now that is.

I was hoping that I might be of some help with the Thackway's as my ggg Grandmother is Elizabeth Thackway from Walford, Herefordshire. Her father William is from Much Marcle. I have managed to trace her line of family back several hundred years and it appears that Thackway and Thackwell was used interchangeably in earlier records. Many of the Thackway's in my tree were agricultural workers and migrated through Herefordshire, Gloucestershire, Worcestershire and even Monmouthshire, while others seemed to be quite settled around the Much Marcle area.

The William Thackway that married Anne Morgan in Much Marcle is (I believe) from Stoke Edith, Herefordshire. As I do not have the Ann Thackway you are looking for in my tree, it might be worth checking out other records. For example, I know that some Thackway's lived in Woolhope but I have not had time to go to the records office to check them out yet.

Have you methodically searched thro this sites PRs for the Thackway name ?. By that I mean only input the Thackway name and input dates +/- 20 years, eg 1700, then 1720, 1740 etc. No other filters.
If you do this you'll see a Thackway family within the Much Marcle Parish, so not far from Ross etc, also in Ledbury tho' less relevant perhaps. By methodically doing this, you should be able to piece together each family group/generation and may well get clues as to Ann/Anne's parents. Dont forget to use spelling variations and allow for quoted ages to occasionally not tie-in exactly.

Now add a Parish Filter:
Looking for Ledbury Thackways there are only 15 PRs on this site. None of the Baptisms are around your Ann's period of 1790s, so for now I'd discount them.

However looking for Marcle Thackways there are 37 dating back to the early C18th, with quite a few Ann/Annes, suggesting this to be a "family" name, so perhaps your Ann is of this line ?. From them piece together the families by dates as above..

As your Ann was born abt 1780, look around about then, yes its time consuming reading all the PRs but often pays off:

Thank you very much, most appreciated. We have now contacted Hentland Church following you advice and will hope to take it from there. Yes, we believe the death in 1829 is probably her, we just cannot find her birth. Maybe it is time for another trip the Hereford Record Office!

sorry for my rather terse reply last night, no excuses but I've had a lot of important & stressfull personal issues to battle thro this last week or so, so probably shouldnt be wasting valuable sleeptime by posting on here too. I understand now where you'e coming from wrt the Guidelines, but even so...

Anyhow moving on, if you've already found relevant PRs from this site, perhaps you could help by posting them, maybe there's a clue there wrt Parishes, witness names, etc. Thanks.

I see Hentland is only just North of Ross so not too far outside the Forest, for my sins another local place I'd never heard of!. In fact if possible it looks like a trip to Hentland Church may well be fruitfull, it would certainly be worth an email.

Unfortunately I can't find any mention to Hentland wrt Bigland Transcriptions, either on the FoD FH site or by Googling. Have you searched this site's various Documents, Wills, etc; again a good potential source of clues ?

Richard Dobson born abt 1849 Herefds, or Ross according to FreeBMD.

Meanwhile looking elsewhere, although FreeBMD doesnt cover the C18th, using that for clues into Herefordshire I see a lot of Ann Thackways born in Hereford/Ross/Newent thro the 1800s. Earlier I think this maybe your Ann ?.

My apologies, I read the posting guidelines and tried very hard to keep to the point, I forgot to say please and thank you at the end though. Again, many apologies.

We have spent many hours trawling through this great site and have found lots of helpful information along the way but have now come to a brick-wall with Thomas Morgan Dobson's parents; and are therefore looking for any help that is out there, please.

As the area these ancestors lived is on the edge of the Forest of Dean we are not even sure that they will crop up, however there are lots of Dobsons and Thackways shown, just not the ones we want, although many of their children and grandchildren have been found via your site.

If any other kind person is willing to help we would be very, very grateful.

If you look at any of my many posts, you'll learn that I am a very friendly, polite person who likes to help people where-ever possible. I often get grief from my wife for spending hundreds of hours helping strangers on this site, yet without finding an hour or two helping around my own family & house !.
