Good morning and thank you for some more info I didn't know.

I was also interested to know if the name in the surname column should really have been George and the forename MARFELL or if this was an error? If he was a son in law, which daughter did he marry? Also was it common in those days for only sons to be beneficiaries and to ignore the daughters?!

Thomas MARFELL (1796-1859) Help with Will please! (reply)

On at least a couple of records I have also seen son-in-law or step-son used as a term, with the child then described as "son of my daughter so and so". Apparently these terms used to have a more fluid meaning than they have for us today.

At that point I usually look at the parish records and try to make sense of it, put it on the back burner, or ask for help . . . not all of this is a straight forward as many of us would hope!

Good luck.

Thomas MARFELL (1796-1859) Help with Will please!

Please could anyone help me understand the will of Thomas MARFELL (1796-1859) of Ruardean Hilll (year proved 1867 no 00704)? I think there may be an error, though I am new to this.

The fifth line says that a Marfell GEORGE is executor & son in law - should that be George MARFELL? If so, is he a son in law and who did he marry?

Also there are two other George MARFELLs listed as witnesses? Is one likely to be his brother in law George MARFELL (8 Apr 1832- 26 Jun 1911)? Any ideas on the third one? All thoughts would be most welcome.
