Grindall - Forest of Dean (reply)

I have tried to get a direct link to the Forest of Dean section of the website for The Grindall Family Research Website - Mandy Walker (contributions by Slowhands on the Forest of Dean area with the 1841 and 1851 census) but am having problems….

However, if you Google

The Grindall Family in Tunstall, Owthorne & Waxholme

go to the very bottom of the first page : Home

There's a box to the right which includes: 'Other Areas' - scan down to the Forest of Dean section there is a write-up on this particular branch of the Grindall's plus the 1841 and 1851 census for the Forest of Dean families concerned.

John Grindall b1755 Littledean (reply)

Thanks M, hope you've been enjoying this good golfing weather.

ref the 1861 Census, my immediate thought wrt Fanny's quoted birthplace "Crusoway, East Dean" is that it is actually "Causeway" ?
This area is the part of Cinderford high above the High Street thro Heywood towards Littledean Hill. However the old OS maps c1880 and later do not use the term, so ??. That said the major feature on those maps is the Tramway/railway upto St Annals Iron Mine which is near Latimer Lodge, perhaps Cause Way and Tram Way are of similar meaning ? The rest of this area wasn't built up in those days. I first knew of The Causeway as a 70s kid, it was the name of Cinderford's football ground. Now its all built on and there is a Causeway Road across the top of this area.

ref the 1841 Census, the quoted place "Hinderland" must surely be "Hinders Lane", which in 1881 is the builtup part of Cinderford at the top of Littledean Hill, now thought of as The Barn and top section of Belle Vue Road, so only yards from the Causeway.

Hope this helps a little.

Hi Glenys
you're most welcome for the suggestions.

You say "David... was born 1859 in East Dean?"

Does your question mark mean you don't have his precise location ? I presume this info is from the Census. In case you didn't know "East Dean" is not a placename as such, but the name of an administrative district that came into usage in the mid 1800s, it includes several places and towns such as Littledean and nearby Cinderford (or Woodside as part of it was first called).

From this site's PRs;

??

Ref the migrations to Wales and beyond, as you may have seen if you search this forum, this is not an unusual story at all, as the local pits were becoming worked-out so others in Monmouthshire etc became more important, and then areas in the US eg Pittsburgh started working huge coal deposits as late as the early 1900s I gather [yes, geography was a favourite subject for me in my schooldays :-). ]

John Grindall b1755 Littledean (reply)

Hello Jefff,

I'll look into your suggestions. I know my grandfather David took his immediate family to Treherbert Wales they worked in the coal mines there. They later emigrated to the U.S.
I am David's granddaughter. He was born 1859 in East Dean? My great grandfather, David was born 1824 Little Dean.He was a butcher. His wife Fanny Ruck in Lea Hamlet.
All of the rest of the Grindles were from Forest of Dean area.

Hi Glenys, welcome back, I recall one of your earlier posts a few years back? and my getting mixedup within the numerous Dean Grindles ;-)

I think this is the Baptism you're searching (or maybe mislaid given as you know the date)

Record_ID: 166152
Entry_Number:
Year: 1755

Sadly despite using the excellent Advanced Search (eg can search ALL marriages inputting Groom surname "GR" - to get all spelling variations - and forename John, etc etc, I cannot find their marriage at the mo, I'll try again later.

I suspect these Baptisms maybe the same family, again found using the Adv Search;

1746 GRINDALL Sarah, John & Mary Littledean
1749 GRINDALL George, John & Mary Littledean
1752 GRINDALL Richard, John & Mary Littledean
1755 GRINDALL John, John & Mary Littledean
1759 GRINDALL Mary, John & Mary Littledean

1778 GRINDLE Sarah, John & Mary Littledean ??

Hope this starts you off (may be worth your looking in this site's Wills etc section.
