The Kirke family - Any FOD Connection (reply)

Thanks for your reply. I have only just recently come across your site regarding my Kirke family as Blaisdon was mentioned in the will of one of the Kirkes. I rather believe that this was because of marriage to a Gleed from that area, the parties of which then went on to reside in Bristol.
Thanks for your reply.

The Kirke family - Bristol (reply)

Dear Jeff

Many thanks for your informative reply, especially about the landscape. My interest has been in the Kirke family that have taken me back from Reading to New Romney then to Bampton in Oxfordshire and then to Bristol and Blaisdon - quite a journey, taken over approx 160 years. I suspect that the Kirkes didn't originate from the latter and wonder just where this trail will lead me next. Thanks again for your input. Regards Fred

The Kirke family - Any FOD Connection (reply)

Bristol is not located in the Forest of Dean or its borders and does not come under the scope of this website which specialises in the Forest of Dean.

Does your Kirke family have connections to the Forest of Dean? If so please share the details with us and we maybe able to assist. If not, I suggest you join the Rootsweb Gloucester Mailing List where the people there will possibly be able to help you out with your query.

Keep to Forest of Dean People and Places
Only post messages relating to people and places connected in some way to the Forest of Dean or near by bordering places. Like the name of this Web site indicates, we specialise in the area of the Forest of Dean.

The Kirke family - Bristol (reply)

Hi Fred, welcome to this great site (and no it's not my creation!).
Thats a fair challenge there, sadly I dont have a lot of time but:
1. did you realise you can freely & easily access the huge database of Parish Records here, just click on the blue "button" at top of page.
2. also you can search this forum, someone else may well have done your research for you, use the search box at top right.
For example searching "Gleed" gives this thread which mentions an old photo of a Miss Gleed. I realise its not as early as you're requesting but perhaps of interest.
http://www.forum.forest-of-dean.net/index.php?id=2335

Back to my first suggestion re searching the PRs, this site has 3 PRs for Kirke, 67 for Kirk, and 98 for Gleed. If you look you can easily filter them down chronologically etc.

The Kirke PRs are all C17th, all presumably related as from same Parish of Blaisdon. This is the flat agricultural area ("Blaisdon Red" plums etc) twixt Glos & Herefordshire, just to the north of the hilly and Forested part of our area.
In my limited experience the majority of the pre C19th PRs on this site are from such outlying flat areas rather than the inner Forest itself, I think largely because in those days prior to the industrial revolution "boom" the Forest was much less densely inhabited than the surrounding flatter farming areas, plus of course there were more Churches hence more Records in those ancient Parishes.

Hello!

Can anyone assist me with the Kirke family of Bristol and environs in the 17th and 18th century? A related surname is Gleed and I would be very pleased to hear from anyone who may be able to throw light on this family. Many thanks
