There are several George Bullocks in W-o-S PRs, no obvious Burial Records in PRs. Luckily just the one Deborah in Burial records,

Thomas BULLOCK born 1797 in Westbury-on-Severn. (reply)

I am trying to trace the Bullock line further back, but can currently only get back as far as Thomas Bullock born 1797 in Westbury-on-Severn. if anyone has any information on the Bullocks going farther back I would love to hear from you!

Hi and thanks for your post, hard to bullieve this was six years ago ! Please extend our thanks and best wishes to your sister, I have a few cousins on my mum's Longhope Wright side who also now live around Stroud despite their parents living their final years near Longhope. Jo Spencer who also contributed to this thread still lives in Longhope as far as I'm aware.
Also a warm welcome to the forum and website, if you use the various drop-down menus off the top banner you'll see the site contains a huge amount of interesting information, so hopefully you will find something of interest altho sadly Longhope hasn't had too many mentions on this site. This is in addition to the huge PRs database, and of course this forum which is a useful source of reference in itself, as you've already found.

You mention taking your line back to "Thomas Bullock born 1797 in Westbury-on-Severn". Is this date from a Parish Record, or an estimate based on a Census record or similar ?
I've just looked in the PRs and the nearest match I can easily find (ie without looking for spelling variations etc) is this one, can this be the same Thomas ?
If it is then the parent's names should be useful for extending your tree.

And I'm sure we can find further records, marriages and burials, for these children. The PRs include at least 374 BULLOCKs in Westbury going back to at least 1581, about a century before any Longhope records. I wonder if the Longhope Bullocks originate from Westbury ?

Thanks again, Jeff.

Edwardian Longhope, Memoirs of Arthur S. BULLOCK (reply)

Hi Jeff, I am Arthur Stanley Bullock's granddaughter and so knew him well! I am so pleased that you found the book useful and interesting. My sister Rachel got it published after Gramp's death, and she now lives on the edge of Stroud. There are other Bullock descendants still living in Longhope and its vicinity. I am trying to trace the Bullock line further back, but can currently only get back as far as Thomas Bullock born 1797 in Westbury-on-Severn. if anyone has any information on the Bullocks going farther back I would love to hear from you!

CHALCRAFT / BULLOCK, Longhope. (reply)

http://www.forum.forest-of-dean.net/index.php?id=38929

Thanks for being reminded to revisit this thread, it's gratifying to see mention of the Sundridge Chalcrafts; my own more recent & independent research into my Longhope aunt's family surprised us to find her husband's line are of Sussex/Kent origins rather than the expected Tirley Glos.
The link is Edith Mary Chalcraft b1893, her mother Mary was born in Longhope (aka "Langbone !", in the 1901 Census, as per Slowhands' post above). The 1911 Census correctly shows:

1911 Census, 6 Room Residence, Sundridge Kent.

William Chalcraft Head abt 1859 52 Male Married 22yrs Gardener Domestic, Sundridge Kent
Mary Chalcraft Wife abt 1862 49 Female Married 22yrs Dress Maker, Longhope Gloucestershire
Edith Chalcraft Daughter abt 1893 18 Female Single, Sundridge Kent
Dick Chalcraft Son abt 1896 15 Male Single, Sundridge Kent
Kathleen Chalcraft Daughter abt 1897 14 Female, Sundridge Kent
Jublee Chalcraft Son abt 1898 13 Male school, Brasted Kent
Minnie Chalcraft Daughter abt 1900 11 Female school, Sundridge Kent
Robert Chalcraft Son abt 1902 9 Male, Sundridge, Kent
Lily Chalcraft Daughter abt 1906 5 Female, Sundridge Kent
Gwendoline Chalcraft Daughter abt 1907 4 Female, Sundridge, Kent

Belated but gratefull thanks to MPG for the Chalcraft military research, at time of posting I hadn't realised it's significance to my own family.

PS Yes, this Census is correct wrt the name of the son born abt 1898. His full name was Jubilee George Chalcraft born August 1897, during Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee Year. I suspect he was known as George.

The Longhope Village Website, has a searchable 1851/1861/1881 census - lots of BULLOCKS

William Henry CHALCRAFT is on the 1911 census at 17 Cadogan Gardens, London S.W. working as a Footman for Thomas William SNAGGE (from Dublin, who was Judge of the County Court) and his family.

All his family are mentioned + their addresses - and a young lady (Miss Florence Cumberland, 78 Upper Berkeley Street Postman Square W) who was sent his Victory Medal.

All very sad reading.

Name: William Henry CHALCRAFT, birth place, Brasted, Kent, residence: Mayfair, Middx - death date, 22 July 1916 - France & Flanders, Enlistment Location: Paddington, Middx.
Edwardian Longhope, Memoirs of Arthur S. BULLOCK (reply)

There are copies still on sale at Gloucestershire Family History Society office at The Gloucester Archives in Alvin Street, I bought one this week! By post from them too. (Arthur S BULLOCK an uncle of a friend of mine in Longhope, and yes, there are still relatives I believe) I am trying to find a link to William Henry CHALCRAFT, mother Mary BULLOCK, living in Longhope in 1916, and commemorated on Longhope War Memorial (incorrectly inscribed as William CHALCROFT)
Other BULLOCKs on Blaisdon War Memorial are Owen Abraham BULLOCK and John BULLOCK.

Edwardian Longhope, Memoirs of Arthur S. BULLOCK

A few months back I finished reading a good book I'd generously bought my mother for Christmas.... well I didn't want it to disappoint her..
"Gloucestershire Between the Wars" by Arthur Stanley Bullock, bought to my attention by this review in the Longhope Village website.
http://www.longhopevillage.co.uk/news/Index.aspx?cmd=view&id=10

My mother was born & bred in 1930s Longhope and her family were all very active within the close local community; the village school, All Saint's Church, Constance's sawmills, cricket & football teams, the silver band, landlord of the Nags Head pub, and so on. Hence we both found the first chapters of this book exceptionally interesting describing Arthur's childhood in the village, with all the above being mentioned albeit from an earlier generation. He recalls his piano lessons with Miss Ivy Wright, just as my mother learnt from her elderly Aunt Ivy thirty years later; Arthur's father George working as a woodturner at the mill, conducting the band & captaining the cricket team, all just as my grandfather did as if in his footsteps. I'd hoped the book would bring back nice memories for my mother, but really didnt realise it would be so very close to home, all rather spooky to get such a vivid impression of both their lives.

"I could hardly have chosen a better village to be born in than Longhope", he writes, with great love of the events and people within his small but busy village; 6 shops, smithy, 2 bakers, post office, coal merchant, 4 pubs, choral society, tennis club, etc etc.
My mother echoed his opinion, no doubt with mixed emotions, having recently buried her only surviving sibling in All Saints churchyard alongside my grandparents.

The author was fortunate enough to earn a scholarship to secondary school in Gloucester, before serving with the Army in France in 1918. After the war his technical work took him to South Wales then a long career with Listers albeit in their Dursley HQ, not their Cinderford factory so perhaps not as relevant to the Forest, but still very interesting.

I thoroughly commend this book to anyone interested in Edwardian Gloucestershire life, especially Longhope. It's a shame the County Library only holds a few copies, and none in the Forest or Longhope districts:

Arthur was the last of seven children, and I see from this site's PRs there were at least eight George Bullocks in Longhope going back to 1763. Prior threads suggest there are still Bullocks in Longhope, I do hope so.
