Fulton, Illinois, USA (reply)

Thank you. My initial query was more a request for suggestions on where to search rather than an expectation of help. However, you are right: perhaps someone knows what happened to my ancestors in Illinois.

William Jordan 1854 m Harriet Morgan 1849 emigrated 1880.
I have traced them up to the 1910 US census Buckheart, Fulton

William Rostron1872 m Edith Morgan 1871 emigrated 1903
Traced up to 1910 US census Canton Ward 1, Fulton

Henry Edward Morgan 1881 m Mary Ann Hope 1883 emigrated 1911
Traced up to 1930 US census Williamson, Illinois

Edith A Morgan 1884 m Francis Hale 1878 emigrated between 1914 and 1920.
1920 US census Buckheart Township 1st District, Fulton, Illinois

That is enough for now!

Fulton, Illinois, USA (reply)

My great-grandparents, John, Sr. and Harriet Stephens also moved to Canton, Fulton county, Illinois from the Forest of Dean, in 1882, with most of their children. One son, William Stephens, remained in England. Two sons and a son-in-law, James Phillips, had already moved to the states. They immigrated because of the coal mines. In John, Sr., obituary it states, "...Mr. Stephens was a miner by occupation and continued to work at his trade after coming to America. He was associated with others in the incorporation of the Simmons Coal company, and continued with the company until its removal to its present quarter, north of Canton, when he withdrew his stock." Canton Daily Register, Dec. 4, 1915
I don't know if there was any connection to the Yemm family, but that name comes up in the census as close neighbors in Drybrook.
William Stephens married Elizabeth Cinderey, and their daughter, Emily Turner and husband, Rowland Turner, later (1910) moved to Canton, and most certainly went there because their grandparents and other family members lived there. I hope this helps somewhat.

YEMM family -> Fulton, Illinois, USA - prior thread (reply)

Many of my ancestors, born in the FOD, emigrated to Illinois but I can't find any information explaining why they would go to Illinois, in particular.

Some individuals, I have tracked to Ellis Island and then to Fulton but all information dries up after the 1920 census. Many just seem to disappear but there must be descendants out there somewhere.

I have had limited success with Family Search and would be grateful for any hints on how to look for family in the US. Also, is there anywhere I can read about their lives in Illinois?

Fulton, Illinois, USA (reply)

The principal attraction of Illinois was coal mining. Two of my great-uncles emigrated to LaSalle in the 1890s (though one ended up as a local post-master).

"Coal has been mined in 73 counties of Illinois. More than 4,500 coal mines have operated since commercial mining began in Illinois about 1810; fewer than 50 are currently active." from http://miningartifacts.homestead.com/Illinois-Mines.html

There seem to have been quite a lot of mines in Fulton county over the years.

I have found it difficult to find information beyond the 1920 census but you may find something about their lifestyle on this site: http://www.illinoisancestors.org/fulton/
