Henry (Harry) Edwards born 1859 in Lydney Glos (reply)

I only know that Margaret (Esther) was blind but was still single and working as a charwoman in 1871. I cannot find her after this date and think she possibly passed away but have been unable to find any details. If you would like to contact me on email I will give you the information I have obtained. I have only had one real previous cousin contact with the Edwards family much to my disappointment. My grandmother was Cora Edwards and she sadly passed away with breast cancer when my father was young.
Best wishes
Carol

Henry (Harry) Edwards born 1859 in Lydney Glos (reply)

Hello cousin!

Thank you for the information about Elijah Jessie Edwards. I know Henry and Jesse came to Yorkshire to work in the pits. Silverwood colliery had started production in 1904, and I know that my great grandad Henry Edwards (born 1858) worked there. He became head union man at the colliery. My grandad William, (Henry's son born 1902) followed him into mining and also worked at Silverwood. Jesse probably worked there too?

The 1891 census shows Henry and Jesse as sons (should be step sons), but I have no more detail. Fanny had 3 children Henry, Jesse and Jane when she married Charles Shaw but was a spinster. I haven't yet worked out who the father of the 3 children is/are, so Jesse could belong to Margaret. Fanny then went on to have a son Albert Richard with Charles.

Are you related to Jesse? Do you have any more information about Margaret? I only know about Fanny's sister Esther and brother William.

Harriet EDWARDS nee ABEL 1860 -1940 Blakeney -> YRKS (reply)

Thank you so much for your reply - I think the information you have provided is my family. It also explains why I was unable to find any trace of Harriet before the 1881 census - I'm new to family history research, so hadn't considered different spellings of surnames.

All the details you have included for the census's from 1881 to 1911 are correct, and tie in with the information I have from family members - Harriet is my great great grandmother so its good to be able to trace her. I also thought she and my great great grandfather may not have married, so it's good to see the details you have found about a marriage. I will send off for the certificate.

I cant believe how quickly you have been able to find all this, so thank you for taking the time to reply, I really appreciate your help.

Henry (Harry) Edwards born 1859 in Lydney Glos (reply)

Thank you so much for your quick reply (and sorry, I should have added more information to help others!).

This is really useful. I tried to trace a previous partner for Fanny Shaw nee Edwards, but it appears she was an unmarried mum, which I didn't know. I can now continue my search looking at the maternal side. Thank you also, for finding Elijah.

I will put a separate request on the forum for information about Harriet Abel.

Once again many thanks.

Hotfoot,

Henry (Harry) Edwards born 1859 in Lydney Glos

I'm trying to trace my great grandfather, and great grandmother and their families, who were born in the FOD.

Henry (also known as Harry), was born in Lydney in 1859, and by the 1881 census he had migrated to South Yorkshire with his brother Elija E Edwards to work in the coal mining industry. They were then aged 22 and 19.

I can't find any record of Henry's birth in the Census, FMD and FOD. Can anyone help? He had an uncle who had a farm, and the uncle wanted Henry to stay in the FOD and work on it, but he moved to South Yorks instead, and remained there for the rest of his life, and raised a family there.

Henry's wife Harriet Abel was born in Blakeney in 1862. I can find no record of her birth, baptism or their marriage. She also moved to South Yorkshire and she first appears in the 1881 census as being 19, and living in Rotherham South Yorkshire, working as a servant to Albert Taylor, the publican of the Effingham Arms public house.

I can trace Henry and Harriet from 1881 onwards but I'm really struggling to trace any official records for them prior to 1881, or for their marriage. I would really appreciate any help.

i found this link in the forum and wondered if this related to any of my family?
http://www.forum.forest-of-dean.net/index.php?id=33117

Many thanks

Can I also just say what a great site this is, I've learnt so much about the area of FOD, so thanks to everyone who contributes and runs!
