This FoD site has several other PRs for this family group, including ten baptisms to Owen and Verena twixt 1912 and 1927. In all of these Owen is recorded as being a collier residing in Harrow Hill area. Did he stop being a Gamekeeper because there was no job, or he wasn't very good at it, or the wages were poor, or ??.. Whatever, it seems he enjoyed a long and healthy life despite his coal mining work.

I've summarised the newspaper report as follows;

Mitcheldean Shooting Affair.

Wright before the Magistrates.

George Wright, an Army pensioner, formerly landlord of the George Hotel Mitcheldean, appeared at Littledean Petty Sessions accused of trying to commit suicide late one night at Mitcheldean Rifle Range, which he was in charge of after leaving the George a few months before. Throughout the incident and subsequent days Wright insisted he'd shot himself by accident, at about 6.30pm, hence his bad state thro' severe loss of blood when discovered on the range by gamekeeper Owen Jones at 11.30pm.
Dr Searancke treated Wright at the range abt midnight, before he was taken to Gloucester Infirmary where the bullet was removed. Despite some witnesses believing it was attempted suicide, due to the wound being in the side of George's forehead while he was supposedly alone on the range shooting at targets, others argued Wright had been sober and coherent after the shooting, and had always said it was accidental. It was stated that Wright was well-used to rifle shooting, hence his being custodian of the range, guns and ammunition, and if he'd want to commit suicide he would have placed the end of the rifle in his mouth as was the Army way.
One witness was shoemaker Frederick Barrett who had lived with Wright for the last 5 years. The report mentions a Mr M.F.Carter Jnr watching the case on behalf of Wright's wife, but doesn't name her.
The case was dismissed as a genuine accident.

So, as Mike has said, we know George MacIntyre Wright was married and an Army Pensioner, so he may be found within Army Records. I'm unsure as to Pensionable age for soldiers at that time, but he was presumably born sometime before 1860 ? This makes the above death record a good possibility, although there are a lot of "George Wright" and "George M Wright" records on file.

On rechecking FreeBMD site I immediately find this record, I know I searched extensively for him last time around so I'd like to think I saw this too - apologies everyone for asking for help on what may seem an easy enquiry !

Alverstoke is a small settlement contiguous with the town of Gosport, on the south coast of Hampshire. It stretches east-west from Fort Blockhouse, Haslar to Browndown Battery, and is centred 0.5 miles east of the shore of Stokes Bay and near the head of a creek which extends a mile westward from Portsmouth Harbour.

This locality seems quite a good fit for a military man.

However I'm still struggling to find any definite Birth or Death records for him which included his unusual middle name. Hopefully I can find George and/or other names in the Census etc. Similarly a quick search of the Census', particularly the 1901 when he was presumably still in the Mitcheldean area, are still drawing a blank.
I hoped searching for Frederick Barrett, shoemaker, would lead me to George in the 1901 Census, probably at the George Hotel Mitcheldean, but he is also surprising elusive, as is Owen Jones gamekeeper.

Now searching for George and his wife (Emma or Sarah Ann, I'll start with Emma) in Hampshire, the very first of several hits from Familysearch gives this seemingly good fit ?

There are a couple of brief glimpses of him in the BNA but nothing substantial. There are an awful lot of George WRIGHTs around!

Thanks Mike, and yes don't I know it, my families were not renowned for original thinking when naming their offspring - pity I didn't know that before I followed suit.. lol.

Probably confused with someone else, but I think one of the BNA entries I found for him related to some form of rifle shooting accident or somesuch, or maybe wrong. Not that it helped me at all. Unfortunately I've had so many forced changes of HDDs over the last few years due to viruses and old age, my researches are somewhat spread around a bit, and since we moved house goodness knows where some of them are... talk about how NOT to do FH research !

George MacIntyre Wright clearly existed, but where born or died etc ?. Bit of an odd one. I'm beginning to wonder now if he's from the Liverpool branch I mentioned earlier - however I thought it would be easy to find my Wrights up there when I tried a few years ago, but IIRC it's an even more common name there than in the Dean !

Best quality images of this old photo of the George Hotel Mitcheldean shows the large noticeboard above the front door carries the landlord's name of George MacIntyre Wright. The Easywell site states he was landlord in 1906, presumably learnt by dating the photo.

In nearby Longhope my maternal grandparents were born c1905, and by 1950 they were pub landlords there until their retirement. Just before my grandad's birth his family were living in Liverpool, the 1901 Census shows his father was a licensed victualler manager, altho the family were back in Longhope within 3 years, except for my grandad's uncle who stayed there and in the pub trade. These Wrights were descendants of two brothers who left their home area nr Birdlip above Gloster c1850 and settled in the Forest. One of them, my maternal G-G-Grandad George, settled in Longhope. His brother Josiah married in Longhope but eventually settled in Mitcheldean, his son Felix Wright b1890 was landlord of the White Horse pub in Mitcheldean c1950.

Knowing all this boozy background led me to wonder if George MacIntyre Wright was a relation of mine, altho why the apparent Scots name, and why wasn't he appearing in any of the family's Census records etc ??

However, dispite my searching the various BMD sites for him, including trying various spellings etc, I have been unable to find any definite idea of who this man was. I did find a reference in the local newspapers, but nothing helpful, and sadly I've lost my research notes...

Please can anyone shed some light on George MacIntyre Wright for me, I can't but help think he should be in my tree somewhere. All suggestions gratefully received, thankyou. Please don't worry about plotting Census data etc for my Grandparents, I have all that and can do anymore myself. What I'd dearly love to see is a Birth, Marriage or Death record, or any other, that appears to definitely belong to George MacIntyre Wright. Hopefully that record will be in Glos or maybe Merseyside, but ???

Just found my g,g,grandfather, George Carpenter on the 1911 census, Living at Old George, Mitcheldean.
I've looked at a map of Mitcheldean and cannot find a street named Old George.
Could Old George be the name of an old inn or maybe a house or cottage?

The inn dates from the 1600s I think, very old photos show it as a very tall three storey building, higher than virtually all the village except for the nearby Brewery, but the upper storey was later removed; I presume it therefore had ample lodging rooms.
This photo of the village shows the George directly above the word "General" and behind the white building, behind it and to the left is Wintle's Brewery which became the home of British Accoustic Films in WW2 and from which the massive Ranks site grew, the Brewery buildings still stand.

The Easywell site suggests the Inn may originally have been used to make spherical lead shot balls as ammunition for muskets etc. Here molten lead is slowly poured thro one of variously-sized holes in a metal plate high in the building, landing in troughs of cold water. As each droplet falls it becomes perfectly spherical, then hardens solid when cooled by the water.

PS reading this history I see the George is yet another traditional inn that has sadly closed in recent years, in fact it may even have been demolished this year. A great shame methinks ....

This recent photo shows the old Brewery buildings, the Maltings as it was called, (but now the Mews rather oddly, which is perhaps reflecting the brewery drays(see post below) but still seems a shame to this old traditionalist, perhaps it was thought non-pc to refer to beer ??).
The building up and behind was the Rank Xerox restaurants and ballroom(yes!), near here was a pedestrian gateway down into the village and the nearby George for lunchtime soft drinks... Immediately to right of the photo view is Mitcheldean's main High Street, the photographer is stood at the gate to the High Street, on which of course the George was built. To the left of this view hidden behind the Maltings is the rest of the sprawling Ranks site.
