Thomas N DAVEY 1864 St Agnes CORN -> Wales & USA (reply)

Thanks Slowhands and Jeff.
Thought I would explain the road we've travelled.

Several years ago I tried to trace a cousin of my Grandmother, Mrs, Florence Davey,
with just a letter in 1958 from Florrie from Nanticoke, Pennsylvania, and a post card from the SS George Washington, at Cardiff docks from Florrie and Mary to let my Grandmother know they would be calling in the next day and that they were staying at 78, Robert St. Ynysybwl.

In the South Wales Echo on 1/9/1982, there was a photo of the ship and a report of 1,22 passengers from Canada, USA and Africa, members of the Royal Order of Moose (should have been the LOYAL Order of Moose)

I looked for Florence in places with a connection to my Grandmother, and found nothing at all.

It wasn't until 2/4/12 that I posted on the FOD site after receiving a copy of the ships passenger list, Florence stated that she would be staying at Broadstreet, Littledean, Newnham.

Slowhands tried everything to find her, but she eluded us.

If she had only mentioned that she would be visiting her sister Mrs. Jones in the FOD it would have been so much easier. :-)

Roll foreward five months and a chance find of her marriage on Family Search, hence EUREKA!

Lots more info later, time for tea.

Margaret

Fantastic stuff S, thats cheered me up no-end on an otherwise grey day, thanks.
He was a bit of a lad wasn't he, no wonder he went to the US, and was a bit "vague" on his Census returns; I suspect his spirit's been laughing all the way with this thread.

Yes I kept seeing the Kea Cornwall "link" too but couldnt make anything of it, I imagine this has kept you busy, well done sir for pulling it all together !

Re my earlier link to the Nankivel website and this quote from it, perhaps he took it as a family gospel ?
"Each of the (Nankivel) brothers left many descendants"....

atb Jeff

ps it's odd for me to think I may have met one of his ancestors in Pen Y Graig, nr Pontypridd, I'll have to namecheck the "register" book for our graduation day; I lived in & abt Ponty for 3 yrs in the 80s while being eddicated, on a rare summer's day from up on the Graig you could see the next rain cloud rushing in...

Thomas N DAVEY m Mary JAMES 1906 Pontypridd (reply)

Hi Slowhands,
thanks for that, very usefull work indeed.
Now you're "in" I feel we're sailing in calm home waters again, sorry but last night it was just getting too much for my small brain to take in.

Margaret posted yesterday that she felt that Flo was Thoms Davey's second wife, on what grounds I don't know (although seeing the LDS hits I was beginning to wonder too) ??

I still wonder if this could indeed be the same Thos Nankevil Davey that Flo marries a few years later ??. However trying to search for Thomas & Mary Davey in the 1911 Census hasn't shown up any obvious hits, which may mean they have indeed already emigrated ?. I certainly havent found an obvious convenient Death for Mary around the early 1900s, but its a very popular name to disentangle....
A Mary Davey marries in Pontypridd in Sept 1908, another in Cardiff in Sept 1911, but no evidence yet to even suggest it's "our" Mary marrying again after leaving Thomas Nankivet; but again there are a heck of a LOT of Mary Daveys in this area !

As the 1911 Census is available to me, and abt the right timeframe, I've tried searching it for a Mary Davey maybe born abt 1865 (like Thos). Again there are LOTS of such ladies, many with spouse Thomas, most in "our" area of the SW UK. One "possible" hit is here, a "widow" after just one year; perhaps Thos staged his death to "runaway" to the US, or maybe she's saying this to cover her own good name, or am I just being fancifull again !

1911 Wales Census
Mary Davey Head(widow) abt 1867, 44yrs, Married 1 yr, Labourer, Swansea Glamorgan Wales, 10 Campbell St.

Ah well... and I thought Nankivet would be an "easy" name to trace....
Thanks again for helping.

Hi Marilyn, welcome aboard this crazy storm-tossed ship (least it was in my head last night, I even dreamt about them all !). Hope you & yours are well wrt the gales, kept you off the golf greens I guess ?.
I'm very glad for Margaret that you've dipped your oar in astwere, this one's too much for me to work out, you'll find it a walk in the park (I do hope).

Yes I noticed on LDS the early and surely? related deaths of Sampson & Phillipa last night, very sad it seems. After looking up the Nankival name on FreeBMD and LDS I see it's perhaps not as unusual as I thought, very much centred around Cornwall and Devon to start with altho' I see an 1842 Birth in Aberystyth(coastal mid Wales) so they did get about, the first I see in Cardiff?Ponty area are:

Births Mar 1885
Nankivell Albert Edward W Cardiff 11a 326

Births Mar 1886
NANKIVELL Frederick William Cardiff 11a 3_5

Deaths Mar 1886
Nankivell Frederick William 0 Cardiff 11a 265
Nankivell Mary 24 Cardiff 11a 263 (Mother of Frederick ?)

By WW1 this seemingly rare name is getting upto London, the Midlands and beyond.

I've found this dedicated & very interesting FH site which may yield further good info Margaret ?
http://www.mumma.org/nankivell/
I see:
"A broad history of the family from the 1600s seems to be that the Nankivells were miners (tinners) of Cornwall.
The Nankivells, who in the late 17th century, settled at St Agnes, are thought to descend from the St Columb family. By about 1690, the third generation of the St Agnes family included four brothers: Richard, Benjamin, Samuel and Samson. Each of the brothers left many descendants."

----------

Hi Margaret, I'm VERY pleased you've seen the actual Census; sorry to ask but hopefully you can understand my reason for asking, sometimes people get attached to a particular PR because it conveniently "fits" in spite of perhaps contradictory evidence elsewhere. Especially in this case where our Thos Davey is unfortuantely rather casual wrt his age etc.

Yes you're right, now that MPG has joined in the three of YOU will sort this one I'm sure. Methinks this mere newbie bloke is struggling on this one, altho I'll try and help of course.

LOL Jeff

(Yes I combined two PRs into one for brevity).
If this Fanny was born 1856 at the latest then by her marriage in 1883 she's aged abt 27 which seems fine. I see on GlosBMD, Samuel is a very popular Cooper name, but I still think this may be our man's birth looking at the date, also note his mother's maiden name!

Thomas N DAVEY 1864 St Agnes CORN (reply)

Hi Jeff,

I have looked at the original 1940 Census, it looks more like an 'N' than anything else.

Thomas keeps changing his birthdate, 1864 baptism, and age 49 when he married Florence in 1918. Also that his parents were Phillipa Tonkin and Samson Davey.(Family Search, under the name Thomas N.DAIVEY)

Nankivel and all the variations seem to be a very old Cornish name, it was also his mother's middle name, perhaps the Ponty one was related in some way, although this marriage in 1906 was 12 years before Flo's marriage, a lot can happen in 12 years.

The three of us will get there in the end :-)

Here's another Thos Davey in 1910 US Census, Luzerne Penn ! (reply)

Hi again all,
I have no idea of it's meaning, but thought I should show this record c/o LDS, as its correct in various ways altho (presumably) the same person ie Thos Davey cannot be in two different parts of the same town in the same 1910 Census, or can he ?
If nowt else it's a great example of why this earch is SO difficult, just TOO many possible Thomas' to pick from !!

"United States Census, 1910,"
Thomas Davey in household of David Hampton, Nanticoke Ward 5, Luzerne, Pennsylvania
name: Thomas Davey
birthplace: Wales
relationship to head of household:
residence: Nanticoke Ward 5, Luzerne, Pennsylvania
marital status: Widowed
race : White
gender: Male
immigration year: 1906
father's birthplace: Wales
mother's birthplace: Wales
family number: 278
page number: 14
Household Gender Age Birthplace
self David Hampton M 40y Pennsylvania
wife Mary Hampton F 40y Maryland
dau Agnes Hampton F 13y Pennsylvania
dau Jennie Hampton F 10y Pennsylvania
son David Hampton M 6y Pennsylvania
Llewelyn Williams M 62y Wales
Thomas Davey M 44y Wales
Gwilym Llewelyn M 25y Pennsylvania
Frances Williams F 25y Pennsylvania

THIS Thomas claims to be born abt 1866, so perfectly fitting Thomas Nankivel. It may be worth finding out what part of Wales Llewelyn Williams is from and when he sailed to the US, it may tie up with Thomas ??.

Thos ?? DAVEY b1868 (ish) (reply)

Thanks for the update Margaret,
it's nice to know I appear to have got something right last night, insofar as Thomas being a Cornishman it seems. Sorry but I'm a little confused abt which Thomas it is ?. Using the Ancestry search screen plus LDS there are clearly SEVERAL Thos Daveys born in Cornwall between say 1862 and 1870. Similarly there are SEVERAL Thos Daveys in the 1920/30 etc US Census "born England" abt 1862-1870.

Yesterday I'd read the 1920 US Census that gave him as Thos M Davey aged 50, hence that was what I searched for last night and what I appeared to find in Thos Mark near Cardiff in 1901, a perfect fit I thought.

However, I see you've now taken him as Thos Nankivel born 1864 ??.

ie from LDS, which I've only just seen:

"England, Births and Christenings, 1538-1975,"
name: Thomas Nankivel Davey
gender: Male
baptism/christening date: 18 Oct 1864
baptism/christening place: St. Agnes (near Truro), Cornwall, England
birth date:
birthplace:
death date:
name note:
race:
father's name: Sampson Davey
father's birthplace:
father's age:
mother's name: Philippa
mother's birthplace:
mother's age:
indexing project (batch) number: I02543-4
system origin: England-EASy
source film number: 1596548
reference number: item 9 p 88

On re-reading the post re the US Census Returns, I see the 1930 Census gives him as plain Thomas Davey aged 58, whereas the 1940 Census gives him as Thomas N. Davey aged 72 !?!. HELP !
QUESTION: do you have access to read the actual US Census forms, to decide once and for all what his middle name initial actually is ?

Meanwhile, how do you know which Thos is yours ?

I've just searched again for Thos N Davey b1864 on the 1901 UK Census on LDS without finding any "N"s at all, ditto on the 1911 UK Census on Ancestry. I cannot find him. Perhaps he's already crossed the Atlantic, or maybe he's just one of the several Thos Daveys (no middle initial given) I've seen listed in various households but ALL still in their home Cornwall/Devon area so NOT near Florence ?. (Thats assuming of course he's met Florence in the UK before they married in the US, why else would she travel there alone ?).

I must say I thought finding Thos Mark Davey very near Cardiff in the 1901 census was relevant, especially as he was THE hit amongst several also-rans.

As I posted yesterday it seems to me that if possible the emmigration records for Thomas really do need finding, so we know when he leaves the UK Census's and enters the US ones. I realise you've posted one record, for which the given age doesnt particularly match your associated birth; please, how do you know these are correct ?. Surely this young arrival at NY would accurately know his age ?. If he had a middle name wouldn't he give it on arrival (sorry, I don't know how precise these pasenger list records are). Either way it seems quite literally a needle in a haystack given the sheer numbers of Thos Daveys entering the US. Yes I see the Thos arriving is from Cornwall, but this man's given age differs from the LDS record above by 6 years !

To recap, according to LDS there are half a dozen or more "possible" Thomas Daveys born "England" in the US Census of the approximate birthdate, so plenty of room for confusion. Thankfully many of them go thro the US Census' with wives so some can be discounted, but even so if he had been married before Florence then ???.

Meanwhile, this may be your man, off LDS, but presumably not Nankivel:

"United States, New England Naturalization Index, 1791-1906,"
Thomas Davey, 1906

name: Thomas Davey
event: Naturalization
event date: 1906
event place:
age:
birth year: 1867
birthplace: England
nara publication title: Index to New England Naturalization Petitions, 1791-1906
nara publication number: M1299
nara roll number: 8
film number: 1429678
digital folder number: 4638984
image number: 05313

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Finally, do you have any views as to whether Florence Priscilla A. MORGAN born Cardiff Sep 1903 actually is your Florence's daughter as per my post ?

I do hope this helps. Personally I'm very confused now, and it's very late so I look forward to hopefully hearing from your later today.

atb Jeff, in wet & wild Middlesex.

=================================================================================

LATER PS:

Re your belief it is Thos NANKIVEL Davey, is this because you've seen the following ?. I've just searched all "Thos N Davey" on FreeBMD and find:

Surname First name(s) Age District Vol Page
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Births Sep 1864 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
DAVEY Thomas Nankivel Truro 5c 162

Now given the very unusual middle name this must be the same man, surely ?

Surname First name(s) Age District Vol Page
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Marriages Mar 1906 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
BREWER Annie Pontypridd 11a 768
Davey Thomas Nankevill Pontypridd 11a 768
James Mary Pontypridd 11a 768
Pritchard Daniel Pontypridd 11a 768

AND HE'S IN PONTY !!
Sadly without a certificate don't know who marries who here. I've searched the area for likely births, none for mother Brewer (altho several in Cornwall for years to follow), several for mother James in South Wales altho not Ponty or Cardiff, BUT James is a VERY common surname there so no proof.

Great record you think, or at least I know I did !.

HOWEVER he's there in 1906, whereas your passenger record shows "him" to be sailing to NY in 1892, so ????.

Food for thought methinks (or in my case a very late supper or early breakfast, goodnight!).

Margaret -

Are you having fun yet?

OK - I am only sending this as your last comment was regarding a previous wife for Thomas. I have no idea on all your history, as I am loosely following your hunt for Florrie (although they are starting to grow on me)...

I found this on Family Search and Ancestry:
In 1900, this Thomas is in the same town that your Thomas is in in 1920 with Florence. I'm not sure about the 1910 location (haven't checked that).

I don't know if this is the first wife because what would have happened to all those children? Divorce? Regardless, I thought I would let you be the judge of that and send you the information anyway. Immigration year is close to what you found. I have rarely found the immigration date to be accurate, but within a year or two is a good shot.

Well done Margaret, even though my gut feel she must have sailed from Cardiff was completely wrong, ah well...
Please keep us uptodate especially if you find out why she emmigrated, was she alone or ?, whether she was already a mother, and the origins of Thos Davey her eventual husband.
Cheers Jeff

ps by then the SS Teutonic was an old liner who had sadly seen better days. She had been built for the same White Star Line, and in the same Belfast shipyard, as the later Titanic. Indeed, when launched in early 1889, she was the first White Star ship not to have square rigged sails ! It's interesting to read she was built as an armed "merchant auxiliary cruser" sporting eight 4.7" calibre guns !, soon removed before entering passenger service. Whether this exercise was just a means to an end (eg gaining financial assistance from the Government), or because there was already a fear of impending world wars, is perhaps debatable.

This fantastic website has a huge amount of detail describing the ship including many photos
