Robert BEALE at Castlemorton WORCS in 1871 (reply)

I must apologise for the fact that the last message on this thread never received a reply. I have no excuse other than age! The Robert born at Tirley appears to be the one whose death was recorded at Tewkesbury in 1848. I have not found an entry for him in the 1841 census and clearly he died before the publication of any of the useful censuses.

robert living with his daughter Ann Wadley in 1871 is, however, definitely my man.

William / Robert BEALE Staunton/Dymock /Redmarley area (reply)

I am away from home for the next week and cannot access all my records. Our Robert Beale is the one who married Elizabeth in Birtsmorton in (as I recall) 1804. The Castlemorton census entries for Robert and Elizabeth at Castlemorton are all ours, as is the entry when the widower Robert is living with his daughter Ann Wadley. I have certainly seen the Tirley entries in the past, but in all of the censuses Robert is adamant that he was born in Castlemorton/Birtsmorton. His age varies considerably over the censuses from about 1787 to 1801, but the most likely seems to be about 1793/7. When I get home I will post more of the info I have.

Thanks again to you and Jefff for your help.

regards

Parents on Marriage Registers c1815 ? (reply)

Hi Dennis,
re the second part of your question, here's two c1815 Marriages "randomly" taken from the FoD PRs. As you can see neither of them have parent's details at all in this instance, altho of course it's not unheard of for the parent(s) of illegitimate children to be witnesses at their child's marriage (not that I'm saying this is the case here of course!). So, sadly I suspect for you, this backs up my experience that yes it's possible the parents are named but not by any means always the case.
Hopefully Slowhands will give us the benefit of his far greater experience in due course.

Alfred Beale b1852, William & Mary Anne, Dymock Chapel (reply)

Hi Dennis,
re the 1861 Census, I'm surprised FMP site doesnt find it in full, perhaps if you try again using the details of the LDS transcript I've posted.

name: Alfred Beale
event: Census
event date: 1861
gender: Male
age: 7
relationship to head of household: Grandson
birthplace: Worcester Redmarley D Abitot
record type: Household
registration district: Newent
sub-district: 2 Redmarley
ecclesiastical parish: Worcester
civil parish: Redmarley D'Abitot
county: Gloucestershire

Don't know abt you but I struggled to find Redmarley family in the past as I mistakenly only searched within Glos, not realising it had also been part of Worcs.
Perhaps you've applied too many too specific filters wrt dates, ages and places, not to mention the possible variations of spelling Beale ?.
Sorry, not trying to patronise, just help. When I use the library access for FMP & Ancestry I always have to untick the "exact" boxes etc before I get good results.

If LDS had the Census I'm sure the UK subscription sites will too.

Hope this helps, keep on hunting and you're catch them !

Alfred BEALE 1853 ish Dymock /Redmarley area (reply)

Thank you Slowhands for your help. The 1852 wedding is correct, witnesses were Mary Ann's brother Peter and Williams's sister Caroline. Thanks also for the confirmation of the grandmother Ann's name in the 1861 census. I still have not found the entry in findmypast, but grandmother Ann is not right. Mary Ann's mother was Anne Cooper born 14 years earlier - 1783 - in Herefordshire. This would also explain why there are so many names I do not recognise as family on that census. The censuses for William's father Robert, incidentally, invariably show him as being born in Castlemorton or Birtsmorton. I have never actually found his birth or parentage and this seems, in general, to have set the theme for the whole family! Once he had been born, Robert was well-documented, but the earlier days have been eluding me for about twenty years now.

Thanks again to both your good self and Jefff for your help.

Alfred Beale b1852, William & Mary Anne, Dymock Chapel (reply)

Many thanks Jefff for your input. The September 1852 registration is certainly our man. I am having problems finding the two 1861 census entries you mention though. Do you have any further references please? I have a sub to findmypast and whatever search criteria I put in, these entries do not come out of the woodwork! The one referring to him as the 7 year old grandson with his grandmother sounds promising and I need to find it! The names on the 1871 Redmarley census do not fit in with other family names I have, and I think there is less likelihood of a match.

The Bromsberrow Heath marriage of 1852 is also correct for William and Mary Ann (Preece, who came from Ashperton, Herefordshire).

Alfred had two brothers, James who was my Great Grandfather, and John born at Bredon in 1865. I have documentation for James from birth, through censuses until he left England for the USA where he died. I also have his family emigrating to be with him and six months later returning to Gloucester after he died.

John, like brother Alfred, is also eluding me. I'm beginning to think they came to sticky, and possibly unrecorded, ends!

Alfred Beale (reply)

Hi Dennis,
I am NOT an expert in these things, other posters will be, but in my experience no I would not expect a child aged 9 to be referred to as an infant in old PRs.
In the 1960s I went to Bilson Primary School, Cinderford, First in the "Infants" for a couple of years, then moved up to the "Juniors" for another 4? years, and finally moved to Secondary school starting aged 10/11 years. Nowadays these "infants" would be referred to as "preschool", I think. So in this rather non-technical respect "infant" suggests say 8 years at the oldest.
I see the dictionary states the word "infant" is from Latin "infans", meaning "unable to speak", it suggests a modern maximum age of 3 years.

The following reference carries many useful observations wrt Victorian Parish Registers, Church Records and Census data based apparently on a fair degree of experience. It states
"The term infant seems to have been used to describe people, say, 0 to 3 years old, whereas child was used for 3 to 10. I'm not exactly sure on this point."
http://fullerfamilyhistory.users.btopenworld.com/FFH_Information.htm

I'd tend to agree with this definition.

Re the particular Infant Burial you have mentioned, I believe this Baptism more closely relates to it, also from this site's PRs.

Record_ID: 179058
Entry_Number: 1407
Year: 1860
Month: Jul
Day: 8
Parents_Surname: BEALE
Child_Forenames: Alfred
Fathers_Forenames: Charles
Mothers_Forenames: Hannah
Mothers_Surname:
Residence: Knappers
Occupation: Labourer
Officiating_Minister: F. Harrison
Event: Baptism
Memoranda:
Notes:
Register_Reference: P225 IN 1/6
Page_Number: 176
Parish_Chapel: Newent
Soundex: B400

Searching for all Alfred Beales BMD register entries in Newent District on FreeBMD gives these results:

Surname First name(s) Age District Vol Page
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Births Sep 1852
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Beale Alfred Newent 6a 194

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Births Jun 1860
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
BEALE Alfred Newent 6a 201

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Deaths Mar 1861
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Beale Alfred Newent 6a 161

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
BEALE Alfred Newent 6a 250

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Deaths Sep 1898
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Beale Alfred 28yrs Newent 6a 150

Now I realise this is not conclusive, as they may have moved in or out of the District, but on the face of it these Records read alongside the above FoD PRs seem to suggest that the "odd" record, ie a Birth with no corresponding Burial, is "your" 1852 one.

I hope this helps. Meanwhile hopefully you or another poster will be able to find your Alfred within the 1861 etc Census, sadly I cannot except via LDS.

Searching Alfred born abt 1852 on LDS I find this 1871 Census return for an Alfred born abt 1853, correct area and mother Ann, could he be yours ?:
