When you click on the maps (Lloyds George Land Survey) website

Click on Square: 39 - then on Square 6 - at the bottom of Square 6 - click on the bottom to move along the map - which was Surveyed in 1878 and revised 1901, is listed Steadfast Colliery - disused.

Then click on Square 10 - which shows Parkend which is in the top left corner - and shows the village with the houses etc.

You can zoom in on the area (clicking the mouse)

John COOPER - has a Poor Rate Number of 1543

There is on the map red ink marks with numers and can see No. 1543 on the map which is a large building on a corner.

? Not sure how the numbering works and whether this is the correct house.

Standfast (Colliery) (reply)

Standfast Colliery was active between about 1865 and 1875 in Churchill Inclosure not too far from York Lodge north of Parkend and Whitemead Park

Browse old maps at the National Library of Scotland web site

Gloucestershire Sheet XXXIX.NW
Revised: 1900 to 1901, Published: 1904

https://maps.nls.uk/view/101453679 Parkend village Standfast beyond teh top right corner just

So the Standfast in the Census is probably an area or a house that "took on" the Standfast name, the number of rooms may be a giveaway a large house of 10 rooms split into two 5 room units for instance. The census typically recorded family units rather than houses I understand.

John William COOPER at Standfast 19011 (reply)

Thanks for this.
My grandmother was Clara Irene b.1910 d.1951.
I have found out that the William Cooper who bought shares in the pit at Parkend and was colliery manager was the brother of Job Cooper and Edwin Cooper. It was Job Cooper who was the father to the John William Cooper in these records.
When my grandmother Clara (daughter of JW Cooper) and Grandad William Gwynne lived at Standfast with my mum there were only two houses at Standfast. I see although previous census records state that there were many more houses - does anyone know whereabouts were they?

Who managed what mines? (reply)

Hi
Can you let me know what you have on William Cooper he was my great, great Grandfather. He had a daughter Clara Irene and she had a daughter Clara Irene who married William Gwynne who was my grandfather. My mum was one of the Gwynne sisters who lived in Standfast house then moved to Woodland Rise, Parkend.
I am trying to understand how they had the house at Standfast. I am working on the principle that William Cooper when he bought shares got the house at the pit, but as he died in 1895 not sure how Clara Cooper kept it.
Perhaps his will might bring something to light. Any info would be appreciated.
Thankyou
Duncan Burman

Who managed what mines? (reply)

I have some information about a William Cooper (d1895), who I came across during some research a few years ago. He was manager of Standfast Pit in Parkend, and a shareholder in Parkend Colliery. Is he a relative of your Albert Cooper?

Rgds, Alan.

Who managed what mines?

Would anyone have any information on where I can find a list of mine managers from the Forest of Dean? My x4 great grandfather (Albert Cooper) was a mine and colliery manager in 1926. He lived at Viney Hill, west Dean (lydney).
