Hi all,
trying to locate Cauldwell Farm, Cauldwell owned by William Mudway (b:1710 d:1792), "a farmer of some repute".

Is it this current farm on the left of this map of St. Briavels or another ?

William's son, John Mudway, owned AYLESMORE estate (location known) from 1797 to 1814.

I intend to visit the area sometime in the next 12 mths to chase ancestors history (more than just BMD dates).
Mudways have an extensive facebook page tracing family back to 1703 & possibly earlier.

FOD records Burial at Newland 12 March 1792

William MUDWAY, residence: Cawdwells

and baptisms of John MUDWAY - at Newland - 10 March 1754 - William & Sarah : residence: Clearwell - other children baptised at Newland of William & Sarah - give address as Clowerwall/Clearwell etc.

Can see there is a Will of William MUDWAY, 1792 Newland, held by the Gloucestershire Records Office, and looking at the number of Public Members Trees of Ancestry - they give Clearwell/Coldwell/Cauldwell etc. as William's residence - can you give any more information?

"Will of William MUDWAY, 1792 Newland, held by Gloucestershire Records Office" -- unfortunately, no-one who has searched there, has actually found this document.

Would Clowerwall Court (a manor) be the "farm" I'm looking for? No doubt several unconnected properties had the town name associated with them. Would William have been the owner or just a head-employee running the farm ? We know that his son John did own Aylesmore Estate for a few years before the mortagee sold it (default of payments by John Mudway?).

The town seems to have had several (similar) name spellings around this time (as did the "Mudway" family - William's father was Thomas "Mathway" (b:unknown d:1729 Clowerwall) plus other possible spellings like Moothway, Mutheway etc in the English Bicknor & Goodrich area).

1703 seems to be as far back as official written records can be relied on -- will keep searching...

Hello -
I have a great great grandfather who farmed at Caudwell farm - he is on the census of 1851 as William Morgan.
This year I was able to find it and went to visit, and took some photos.
Have you found it meanwhile?
It is on a long narrow lane that just goes to two farms. It's marked on the ordnance survey. It was a lovely day when I found it, and it is a beautiful place.
I missed a turning first time, but it is in Nightingale lane. You have to find the inn at Stowe, then turn off the primary road northwards, then turn right, then fork left later.
The original house has been extended in the later nineteenth century.

thanks for the directions -- I would love to see those photos of the farm ! Interested in its history too - do the current owners know how old the farm is or its past history ? I was wondering if it was in fact the same farm as William Mudway owned or a different (more modern) property with the same name -- nice to know it is the one.
I've no idea where to search for documents like rates notices or newspaper stories of the 1700-1800s, if they still exist.

Been planning a trip to England to see it myself (I'm in Oz) and do some local research there into family but poor health has delayed that.

this is the best site in my opinion for looking at old Ordnance Survey Maps. I've set this link to (hopefully!) take you directly to a "homepage" for Clearwell. (Sorry but this site doesn't "like" direct hyperlinks).

If you then click onto the map it should enlarge and you can see Caudwell Farm marked just west of Clearwell Castle. Once you take a few minutes to master it this site is excellent. For example, to the left of the map there's a menu of many other OS Maps thro the ages, some offer far more national coverage and are in bigger scale than others. For your purpose probably the First Series Map is best, its in B & W but has huge amounts of detail. "Caudwell" is conveniently marked for you just above the red British Museum stamp !. Whether we can assume Caudwell wasn't a Farm at this time is debatable. Once you've opened a map you can use the mouse cursor to navigate around it and zoom in & out etc. Below the map you can see the exact date, for this B&W First Series Map Sheet 35 is from 1831. Unfortunately the next Dean map on this site isnt until 1945 when it's marked "Caudwell Farm".

One thing you may notice when using differing Issues (or Series) of these maps is that even "official" Government documents such as these are also subject to variations of spelling of placenames thro time, presumably as those compiling the data on the ground relied on local people for such information rather than some national database as they would nowadays.

Unfortunately this site means you must enter your destination into its search engine for it to then load the appropriate map; unlike the OS site you can not move across the maps so easily by mouse. Also this site doesn't recognise "our" Clearwell in its search engine, so enter "Clearwell Caves" or similar. (It doesn't recognise Caudwell). This lets you eventually find a very large scale 1881 map showing "Caudwell Farm", next to an "old limekiln"... Using the righthand menu you can also load other maps post1881 of varying scales.

Finally, not sure if you gents know, but if you want to exchange any personal details such as photos you can best do this by clicking on the recipient's user name, or envelope icon, on their forum posts. This lets you send private mails straight into their email inbox without them needing to be on the forum website at all.

I have my family history back to a marriage in 1703 & want to trace earlier, however name changes / spellings in the sparse written-records on-line make it difficult.

My ancestor Thomas Mathway (m:1703) is also listed variously as Muthway, Mutheway & Mudway in records (possibly due to interpretations of spoken names by non-local record-keepers ?). After 1744, the family is permanently "Mudway".

Between 1588 & 1700 there are also references to FOD families called Mothway, Monthway, Mouthway, Moothway, Mothorway & Motherway in records - so could these be the same family ?

Is there a way to do further checking on-line or do I need to hire a UK genealogist ?

? Bream is about 4 miles from Newland and approx 3 miles from Clearwell

There appear to be long standing MOTHWAY etc - from Breeme on FOD records

Have you used the Family Search Church of Latter Day Saints - and checking this surname and variants from say 1500-1700 in Gloucestershire.

Many older records are in baptisms/marriages/burials/wills are in Latin.

Wills are one of the best way of finding out family groups.
