Furnaces Cinderford (reply)

Thank you for the extra info... It's so interesting. So you're a forester now living in Wales? I was born at 22 Abbey St in Cinderford 1963. Popejoy family emigrated to Canada 1974. Still miss it and loved growing up there. My hubby and family are from Merthyr Tydfil, Wales. I'm working on our geneology and loving it.

On the hillside to the north-east, known as Cinderford Tump, the White Hart inn had opened by 1834 (fn. 41) and, to the west, a school was built by Edward Protheroe in 1840 and the church of St. John the Evangelist was opened in 1844. (fn. 42) At the ironworks, which stood 800 m. north of Cinderford bridge, cottages were built at the bottom of the later Victoria Street to the south-east.

Furnace a residence? (reply)

Thanks for all your reply's. It makes sense they were cottages as I also remember some addresses were listed as Cinderford Ironworks on numerous censuses. I'd love to find some pictures. I'll check out the book you mentioned.

Furnace a residence? (reply)

Hi Aheritage,

My Grandparents lived in Valley Rd, Cinderford back in the 1950's.
During my time playing in the area, we were told about the Furnaces cottages, constructed for use by the workers of Cinderford Iron Works.

If you can get hold of the railway book "The Forest of Dean Branch" Vol 1
ISBN 1 874103 05 4 (Wild Swan Publications. 1-3 Hagborne Rd, Didcot, Oxon).

This book on pages 187 - 195 has a history of the Cinderford Ironworks, maps and photos of the iron works and cottages which I am sure are the said Furnaces cottages.

I could scan a copy of the picture but the book is copyrighted, perhaps admin can verify if a scan is ok to do or not.

Regards
Forester
