Hi

So due to lock down I'm sat at home researching my family tree.

Henry John Fox (1845-1917) was my great great grandfather.

I have discovered quite a bit from this excellent source and hope I can add a photo or two in the future.

If/When we can get out of the house again I'll be planning a trip to the Cotswolds and Coleford.
We now live in Cambridgeshire so it's not too far for a little holiday.

We'll be trying to get photos of graves and burial sites the Fox family.

@Carl
Did you get to Coleford and if so did you get any further information that could be helpful?

You and I may be related!

Carl, my Forest forebears came to Aotearoa in 1860, so perhaps this is not directly comparable to your family's 1900 situation.

However, there were 10 siblings in my great grandfather's family (including him) and five came here and five stayed in Britain (as far as I know; at least I haven't been able to find any records of any of the other five coming here).

Great grandfather was an iron miner, and had a limited future if he stayed in the Forest - as far as I can work out his father would have been a tenant farmer, so there would be little to inherit.

Great grandfather certainly brought his younger 16 year old sister out after him, but what influence he had on the others I do not know. I imagine they would not have come had his opinion been unfavourable!

In comparison with what I have been able to read about in Forest sources, he was able to buy and develop a small freehold farm here (Saltwater Creek, North Canterbury) with a two storey house, and to give his children a reasonable start in life. I think this would have been true for other Foresters who came out here about the same time - what things would have been like in 1900 I am not sure - at least the 1880 depression was over by then, and the Land Wars were finished so your family would not have arrived here at a time a serious conflict. However, a lot of Foresters came to NZ in the 19th Century as you will discover on this forum.

I note that you want to visit Coleford (which is where my Great grandmother came from [Coalway Lane]). We visited the Forest in 2004 from NZ, and I was bowled over by the beauty of the place. Our visit was a bit spoiled by lack of understanding on my part, and when you are this far away it makes it difficult to get a second chance. So I would urge you to find out as much as you can before you go, to make the best use of your time. Example - I thought great grandfather's family came from St Briavels, so we went there as well as Coleford for great grandmother. Unfortunately they came from the parish of St Briavels rather the village of the same name. So the trip to St Briavels village was a waste of time in one sense, because of ignorance/confusion on my part. Now I would plan a completely different itinerary!

Best wishes, John

Dear "Cousin" Jeff

My head hurts when I try to get the detail on "cousin"!

James is my great grandfather's brother. It appears there were 3 brothers who went to New Zealand: Henry, Sidney and Richard.

I think it was Harriett who married a Pace.

I am struck by the fecundity of the family around this time. Ten kids is a lot for anyone.

Could you let me know if I can access the parish records online?

Also, do you have any old pictures of Barnhill or any idea of the housing? On google maps they are semi-detached from this century. I wonder about the kind of life a miner with a large family would have survived at this time. Did a lot of people from the Forest of Dean emigrate to New Zealand around 1900? So many questions. If I did visit the area, do you where would be best to visit in terms of getting an impression of the lives people would have led?

Carl

Dear "Cousin" Carl.

don't worry about that revelation, if we go back far enough I think most Dean Foresters are probably "related" to some degree... it was a remote # secluded area with not a lot to do after dark... Which leads me to thank you for introducing me to a great "new" word. Yes, fecundity (wow!) wasn't too rare in those days, it surprised me too when I started looking up my tree but in fact large families were quite normal for the working classes in the days before family planning etc, especially as that could mean more earners. I mentioned my paternal grandmother, a Lydbrook Taylor, to our surprise she was the youngest of eleven, spread across 26 years, her father was one of eight, etc... Not saying such large families were the norm, but I don't think they were that unusual either.

# Less so now, but for centuries the Dean was a remote place, William the Conqueror made it as far as Gloucester, but like even the Romans before him, wasn't keen to risk climbing into the wild Forest area. As recently as the late 70s young Foresters were often met with hostility for being "backwoods roughnecks" when we went to the "big city" of Gloucester all of 15 miles away !.

I think you're right re Harriet & Pace(Page?), her name sounds familiar re my browsing across the Fox's Census returns.

This forum has seen countless examples of Foresters travelling many miles to find work in other mining areas (or the associated metalworking industries; initially across Britain, and then across the world to the USA, NZ etc as those territories were found to also have raw mineral deposits. Some families returned, many stayed, hence the forum routinely receives many queries from t'other side of the world.

Until last year the FoD Parish Records were only available online via the transcripts on this website. If anyone thinks they may be in error, the site’s admin staff can be asked to check the original PR, which I think are usually in photographic form as the originals are held at Gloucester Archives and such like. Last year Gloster Archives linked-up with Ancestry, so photo images of the actual PRs can now be seen and downloaded from that site.

Re the housing at Barnhill and Broadwell, originally it would be wooden cabins built by the woodmen/quarrymen/miners themselves, which by the 1800s had become cottages using locally-quarried stone, then (post War) brickbuilt 2 storey semi’s etc built by developers, the British Land Society, or local authority “council”; the British History site as mentioned in my earlier post details this, certainly no tower blocks of flats etc in the Forest !. The various old Ordnance Survey maps give an idea of the “random” nature of the Forest’s towns, during the Industrial Revolution of the 1800s the Forest’s desirable mineral wealth caused an explosion in population, often without any civic planning as such, hence it's rather random appearance especially in the older villages..
See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Broadwell,_Forest_of_Dean

Regarding the British History website, it's a truly excellent resource but can seem a little disjointed in it's layout, so for any given section it's best to word-search the text for, in this case, "Broadwell".
The section best describing Broadwell's housing can be found about 2/3 down the "Settlement" page; search here
http://www.british-history.ac.uk/vch/glos/vol5/pp300-325
Also search this page
http://www.british-history.ac.uk/vch/glos/vol5/pp117-138#h3-0003

For old photos this site has an excellent Gallery section worth browsing, plus the Sungreen site I’ve already mentioned, these will give you a good idea of the topography and townships of the FoD, plus Google Streetview etc. Also the excellent old photos books by Humphrey Phelps, but these tend to feature people and workplaces rather than general housing.
Also see https://www.francisfrith.com/broadwell,christchurch,gloucestershire

This forum has been operating for many years now, so it’s highly likely that any general questions you may have eg "NZ migrants" or "Dean tourism", have already been answered; please just use the forum search facility, some examples are below. To get an idea about the way our ancestors lived in the past there are some well-known books that you can probably find in your local library, or buy online, (think of authors such as Winifred Foley, Joyce Latham, Phelps and Dennis Potter), and when you do visit make sure you go to the Dean Heritage museum at Soudley.

Hoping this helps, Jeff

PS In case you've not already found out, be warned that most internet searches for "Broadwell" will take you to the very different village of the same name in the Cotswolds end of our beautiful and varied county.

Another source worth looking-up, particularly where we know our ancestors were in business, are the old Trade Directories. The following site has several for the area, don't forget to look in the "West Dean"s as well as "Coleford" etc.http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~cbennett/

Sadly, I cannot find any "Fox" entries in the coal mining/selling trade, hopefully they are there but I missed them ?. Or maybe they just didn't want, or need, to pay to be included. However I suspect these names ARE in your tree, from the 1902 Coleford Directory from the above webpage.

FOX, Henry and James, Broadwell area mine owners ? (reply)

Carl,
I wonder if you've seen this webpage while searching the net, it lists the trustees of Broadwell Memorial Hall, including a "Fox, James William, Broadwell Lane End, 09.01.1920"
http://www.sungreen.co.uk/Broadwell/broadwell_memorial_hall_gsv.html

Presumably James was reasonably well-off to be a Trustee, I wonder if he is the same as the James Fox below, or maybe his father?. Edenwall pit is at Broadwell, it's marked on the old OS maps ?.

"Edenwall Mine.
10 June 1944 Portion re-granted to James Fox and Henry Corin of Broadwell and Fred Bowkett of Cinderford and Lewis Wilce of Ruardean Woodside."
http://lightmoor.co.uk/forestcoal/CoalEdenwall.html

The Lightmoor site is the definitive site for the history of the Dean mines (pits).
It also mentions another Fox at Bixlade mine, which is also at Broadwell.

"Bixlade mines.
1894 Output Bixslade (Fox) 1,869 tons; Bixslade No. 2 844 tons."
http://lightmoor.co.uk/forestcoal/CoalBixslade.html

Another great reference site for old mining is the Peak District site. This list of pit-owners in Gloucestershire in 1896 is very helpful, stating;

"Bixslade, "No. 2" pit, at Coalway Lane End, Coleford
Owners Pace and Fox of Broadwell Lane End, Coleford.
Six men mining coal."
http://www.pdmhs.com/docs/default-source/resources/mines-list---1896/south-of-england's...

When viewing the Census forms earlier I recall seeing the PACE name as near neighbours to the FOX household, I think I also saw evidence of marriage between the families.

???

This next man Henry Fox may be from the same family ?. Cinderford Bridge mine is only a few miles east of Broadwell via Speech House. There is also a "Foxes Bridge" very near there, over Cinderford Brook, and a pit of the same name. I was born nearby, and always assumed the name related to the woodland animal, hence "Foxes" not "Fox's", but maybe not .... ???

If these men are your relatives, I'm sure further evidence to their mining would be provided within the more recent Census's, the 1939 Survey, and the Parish Records for them or their children's Baptisms and Marriages.

"Cinderford Bridge mine.
The gale was re-granted on 11 June 1906 to a Henry Fox and nine others. They had originally applied for the re-grant in February 1878 immediately after the forfeiture."
http://lightmoor.co.uk/forestcoal/CoalCindBridge.html

Finally, a reference to Henry Fox

"Fox's Trenchard mine.
F3 1175
31 January 1910 Application for grant to Henry Fox
23 May 1910 Granted, intended to work by means of a pit
3 June 1910 Henry Fox to Amos Wm. Brown
http://lightmoor.co.uk/forestcoal/CoalFoxsTrenchard.html

So far I cannot find this pit on a map, Trenchard is the name of a coal seam across a large area, but it seems these mines are both in the Broadwell/Coalway area.

"Smith's Trenchard.
2 May 1945 SMITH'S TRENCHARD No.2
Granted to James William Fox, Henry Richard Corin, both of Broadwell Lane End, Frederick George Bowkett, Cinderford and Sydney Jones, Berry Hill."
http://lightmoor.co.uk/forestcoal/CoalSmithsTrench.html

Clearly this is the same gentleman I mentioned earlier wrt Broadwell Memorial Hall.
It appears he is definitely one of your ancestors, compare this PR from this site's database to my earlier 1871 Census transcript for Henry and Clara;

Record_ID: 69165
This site's Database shows he married Caroline HIGGS of Broadwell in 1892 (he was a collier resident Broadwell Lane End, a witness was a Henry James Fox), James died in 1946 aged 73.

You can also search the PR database for Records which include James William FOX as the "father". I've found some Baptisms, most show James as a collier living in Barnhill area, plus a 1924 Marriage Record for his son Percy. Percy marries a Mary Louise TAYLOR of Worrall Hill nr Lydbrook. The PR shows her father is Osman John Taylor.
I recognise that name from my own tree, my paternal grandmother was a Lydbrook Taylor, Osman was her cousin. Osman was a Lydbrook collier, like my grandad, like so many Osman died young while in the pit; I've researched him thro the old newspapers etc and he died in an accident in Cannop Colliery, Lydbrook, in 1922, aged 44. So thanks "cousin" Carl, for helping me extend my own tree.

========================

Have you seen the "Register of Freeminers" database, from the Resources menu ?
Searching the FOX surname gives 23 names, they are virtually all within the general Coleford / Lane End aka Broadwell area.
http://forest-of-dean.net/joomla/index.php/freeminers-register

http://lightmoor.co.uk/forestcoal/Overviewmap.html
Each section can be enlarged by clicking on it. Black spots are coal mines aka pits, brown are iron mines.

For a study of the mines of the Coleford area up until 1850, when the mines were more numerous and smaller, I thoroughly recommend this excellent article which I've only found today after years of similar searches, so thanks again to you Carl !.

Richard and Decima Fox, son Henry and his descendants (reply)

Hi Carl, welcome to this excellent website and friendly forum. I hope you take the time to browse thro the whole website, including it's old maps, photos, newspaper articles etc etc, as this will give you a real flavour of the Forest of Dean area, as well as tracing your family thro the Parish Records etc. (As an aside I also live in the London area, have done since moving from the Forest in the 80s, how I miss it now..).

Re Richard Fox and family, as posted by Slowhands earlier in this thread, here they are in the 1851 Census. I don't think it was mentioned, but as you can see they have FOX neighbours which I assume were related, in my experience FOX isn't a particularly common local surname.

1851 Lane End, West Dean.
Given Name Surname Relationship Age Estimated Birth Year Gender Birth Place

Richard Fox Head 37 1814 Male Coalminer. West Dean, Gloucestershire, England
Deinna Fox Wife 34 1817 Female West Dean, Gloucestershire, England
Richard Fox Son 14 1837 Male Coleminer. West Dean, Gloucestershire, England
Benjamin Fox Son 12 1839 Male Scholar. West Dean, Gloucestershire, England
Henry Fox Son 8 1843 Male Scholar. West Dean, Gloucestershire, England
Jane Fox Daughter 5 1846 Female West Dean, Gloucestershire, England
Harriet Fox Daughter 2 1849 Female West Dean, Gloucestershire, England

William Fox Head 61 1790 Male Labourer. West Dean, Gloucestershire, England
Ann Fox Wife 61 1790 Female West Dean, Gloucestershire, England
William Fox Son 29 1822 Male Labourer. West Dean, Gloucestershire, England

John Fox Head 72 1779 Male Labourer. West Dean, Gloucestershire, England
Rachel Fox Wife 67 1784 Female Cardiff, Glamorgan, Wales

As I think you know, Lane End is the very old name for the villages that lay on the roads & tramways leaving Coleford eastwards into the Forest and Speech House. Nowadays they're more commonly known as Broadwell and Coalway. The following webpage gives a detailed history of Coleford and the area.
http://www.british-history.ac.uk/vch/glos/vol5/pp117-138

The Census page preceding the above page shows it's address as Barnhill, this locality and road-name still exists and nicely places your FOXs in Broadwell rather than Coalway. In fact that Census page includes another FOX household;

1851 Census Barn Hill, West Dean
George Fox Head 38 1813 Male Carpenter journeyman. West Dean, Gloucestershire, England
Carolene Fox Wife 24 1827 Female West Dean, Gloucestershire, England
Matilda Fox Daughter 1 1850 Female West Dean, Gloucestershire, England

Unfortunately this area lies right on the edge of the relevant old Ordnance Survey maps, this one from 1883 shows Broadwell at the top left of the map.
http://maps.nls.uk/view/101453661
(This is the adjoining map to the west, showing Coleford).
http://maps.nls.uk/view/101453631

As you can see Broadwell Lane End is near extensive stone quarries as well as coal mines, I suspect the Foxes described in the census as "labourers" were probably working there, and were not "agricultural labourers" in the usual UK Census sense (indeed this same census page does list one neighbour as an "ag lab", rather than "labourer" as with your Foxes).

This later map from 1918 helpfully includes Broadwell on the same page as Coleford.
http://maps.nls.uk/view/102346004

If you find Broadwell Lane End, look for the lane running across the southern edge of Broadwell connecting Littledean Lane End and Barnhill Coal Pit. On modern Google maps this is called "Foxes Lane"; it MAY perhaps be a link to your ancestor's part of the village.. ?.

Carl, I hope this may have been of some help, I don't want to reproduce the whole line as it seems you've already researched it, but if you have ANY specific queries we're all very happy to help.

Richard and Decima Fox (reply)

Dear All

I am Carl and am Richard's great-great-great grandson through Henry, then Henry, then Doreen, then Lynne. I was born in NZ as was my mother and grandmother. Apparently my great grandfather was born in Coleford.

Would be good to know any information on any of Richard's son Henry's siblings. Hope to get to Coleford at some point as I live in London. Very exciting!

Richard and Decima Fox (reply)

Hello Donna, Yes your information is mostly correct.
I believe Tom Fox (1877) was the son of Benjamin Fox (1844) abd Emma Hawkins.
Benjamin (1844) was the son of Richard Fox and Decima Hamblyn.
I am the granddaughter of Tom (1877). He did emigrate to NZ and married Veronica Bridget O'Brien in 1913. My father Thomas Grahame Fox (1915) was the eldest of their five children. I would be very interest to know about Tom's (1877) sisters who I thought were Annie (1873), Emily (876) Bessie (1883) and Rose (1886). My understanding is that the eldest son of Benjamin and Emma, Benjamin William (1870) was killed in the Boer War in 1900 along with two of his son. His only surviving child Thomas Victor was sponsored to NZ by Tom (1877) and I have quite a bit of information on him.

Kind regards
Sarah

Thomas FOX Veronica O'BRIEN (reply)

Kia ora from NZ

There is a marriage between Veronica Bridget O'Brien and Thomas Fox recorded in the NZ Births, Deaths, and Marriages register for 1913.

There are a multitude of deaths for variants on Thomas Fox - I can't select one for you because I do not have sufficient details, but you may be able to if you have a second given name for him - I have checked the age at death for the likely Thomas Foxes against the birth date you gave, but none of the ones I checked seemed to match.

There are no death records for Veronica Bridget Fox, but there is a death record for a Veronica Fox in 1968. Her age at death was 76 which means she was born about 1892, which would make this Veronica Fox about 21 in 1913 (time of her marriage).

I haven't looked for any births for their children.

My suggestion is that you go to:
https://www.bdmonline.dia.govt.nz/ and carry out your search in Historical Records. Unfortunately you will have to pay for the full records.

Cheers
John

Richard and Decima Fox (reply)

I am looking for any help with the children of Richard and Decima Fox. I currently have the following children accounted for in my family tree, Richard, Benjamin, Henry, Jane, Mary Anne, Harriet, Rhoda, Julia, Eliza Maria, Milson and Tom. However there is a story in the family that there was also a son James (I can't find any info on him at present) who had a son called Tom in 1879 and Tom emigrated to New Zealand. Once settled in New Zealand Tom married Veronica O Brien and had five children.

I am trying to establish if the story is correct. Any help or information regarding this would be greatly appreciated.
