Thanks again Jeff! Hewler's farm is still there in Brains Green and I have been in touch over the years with the family who most recently lived there, although I believe it is now being sold. The Hewler family were not part of my ancestry as far as I know, I've mainly got Wood/Powell/Broben so far. Family legend has it that my ggrandmother - a daughter of William Wood who married Elizabeth Powell - was from a
gypsy family. This is supported by the result of my dna testing!

Many thanks Jeff. This is really helpful, because it shows that Ann, wife of John Powell, who was living at Hewler's (not Uler's!) farm, came from Maisemore. I amalso assuming that John and Ann are parents of Elizabeth. Hopefully I should now be able to find her birth and parents. I am attempting to following my mother's line back into the mists of time as far as I can.

You're very welcome Jane, if you've not tried it in the past the FamilySearch site is often very helpful, once the filters etc are "mastered", its especially good at offering variations of name spelling. On that subject, as you're probably already aware (apologies as I have no idea what part of the world you're from), even nowadays when the broad Forest dialect is largely dying-out, the name Hewler's would be pronounced Uler's as we drop the "h" s.
THAT SAID, I can find just one HEWLER in the FoD database, and Rodway's not TOO far from your Brain's Green area so may be linked, I suspect you've already seen this in your researches.

I'll also post this transcript into your old thread abt Hewler's Farm, I guess it was transcribed after you posted it.
http://forum.forest-of-dean.net/index.php?mode=thread&id=8812

Ref the spelling of Hewler's Farm, sometimes modern placenames which make sense to us are actually relatively-recent cleaned-up versions of older names which were sometimes completely different. A lot of this happened when the first O.S. maps were produced and the Army surveyors were asking local people what a place was called and mis-heard or mis-spelt what they were told. An example is how the First Edition from 1831 shows Brain's Green as Bryant's Green, hope this link works, use mouse to zoom into the area just south/below the big "L" near the centre/bottom of this map. We assume this was an error as later maps show Brain's, but then again how accurate was the local knowledge of their true history in the early 1800s, perhaps Bryant's was correct ?
http://www.visionofbritain.org.uk/maps/sheet/first_edition/sheet43

That map doesn't mark Hewler's Farm, unlike this later one from 1881.
http://maps.nls.uk/view/101453691

Good luck Jane with your continued researches, hopefully searching for the BMD records of the various people listed in the Census' I found will create family groups whick link into your tree.

James POWELL...1785 Shoe Maker Brains Green (reply)

I'm searching for the marriage of John Powell and ?, who lived at Hewler's Farm, Brains Green in 1850, when their daughter Elizabeth married William Wood. Can't find them in the 1841 or 1851 censuses. It's possible that John was the son of James Powell and Mary Howlder, who was baptised in Blakeney Chapel in 1799. And possibly the brother of Joseph the shoemaker! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Jane, got to be quick for now as getting late, but for starters using the excellent free-to-access LDS aka FamilySearch site, looking for all John Powells in Awre. https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:SGKL-YMM

Unsure as to how close these households were to each other as cannot read actual census forms, but presumably are near-neighbours and probably related;

1861 Census, Miller's Row, Awre, Glos

1851 Census, Blakeney Hill, Glos

Elizabeth Wood Wife F 38 Awre, Gloucestershire
William Wood Son M 0 Awre, Gloucestershire
Ann Powell Lodger F 78 Maisemore, Gloucestershire
James Warren Servant M 13 Agr lab. Lydney, Gloucestershire

John & Ann Powell are described as "married", suspect they are a married couple, hence most probably parents of Elizabeth, wife of William Wood as per yr 1850 marriage.

Look like same John & Ann in the 1841 census below, with a daughter Elizabeth born abt 1819.

----------

1841 Census, Uler'S Farm, Awre, Glos
Household, Role, Sex, Age, Birthplace
John Powell M 65-69 Gloucestershire
Ann Powell F 65-69 Gloucestershire
Ann Powell F 25-29 Gloucestershire
Elizabeth Powell F 20-24 Gloucestershire
Frederick Powell M 20-24 Gloucestershire
John Morse M 15-19 Gloucestershire
William Powell M 30-34 Gloucestershire
William Wood M 30-34 Gloucestershire

(ie Hewler's Farm)

I've tried looking thro this FoDFH site's PRs for likely Births and a Marriage to fit this household but so far no obvious hits, most names are quite common yet Frederick is so rare cannot find his birth at all, so needs more work but hopefully this helps you a little ?

Thank you 'slowhands'.
That family does seem the likely option, it's strange that his death certificate has 'Joseph and Sarah' as his parents.

But then again my marriage certifcate has a mistake and we can't be bothered paying for it to be corrected, so I guess a less informed family member assisted with his death cert.

Joseph POWELL... whose your Daddy?

My great x3 gfather was born in 1840 in Gloucestershire, and emigrated to New Zealand in 1862.
I'm trying to locate/confirm his home town and family.

What I do know is;
Prior to his departure he was presented with a prayer book (dated 1861) for services as a Sunday School teacher in Blakeney.
He married in NZ in 1866.
And he made a trip back to England in later life and used to frequent 'Speech House' in The Forest of Dean'.
Died 1917 in NZ

My research led me to a house-hold in 'Brains Green' where the family of James and Anne Powell resided, and their youngest son was Joseph who was born in 1840, and had a sister... Susan. This all fits...but...
I've recently sited a conflicting death certificate that states Josephs father was also called Joseph and his mother was Sarah.

So now I'm seeking help to locate this family to dispell/confirm one of them.

Anyone?
thankyou

regards
