John & Mary WATKINS from Newent, GLS (reply)

Here is the greater part of the file I have on this couple and their family.
I cannot find burial record for either spouse, although John appears to have married again after the death of Mary Watkins (nee Thorne).
Mary does not appear to have been buried in Newent in 1868 although her death is recorded in the March Qrtr of that year. There is no evidence they moved away from Newent before the 1891 Census.

Is there a John Watkins listed in the 1901 census for Newent, he would be 83 at that stage and I cannot find a death record before 1901.
Any assistance appreciated, can anyone else claim links to this family?

Killing 2 birds with one stone!
John is listed as a Baker in the 1851 and 1861 Census, but I'm afraid Mary's place of birth doesn't look like Stogumber to me, but that isn't to say that the ennumerater didn't hear the name of the place correctly!

Its a pleasure. Interestingly though there is a John Watkins (a Baker) born around 1819 at Newent, in the 1881 census (which is free to look at on familysearch.org) who is married to a Harriet. Details below. I wonder if John was widowed by Mary and then married again?

Hi Karaka
There are no obvious matches in 1871, and I have unfortunately just run out of viewing credits for now! either they have moved or died by then? Looking on the IGI - John Watkins was christened in Newent 28 Sep, born to William & Sarah. Other children of theirs may include Henry, William, Ann, Benjamin, Elizabeth, Sarah and Hannah. Mary Thorne appears to have been born to John & Ann, along with possibly a John, Joseph, Sarah and Charles. But maybe you knew all that anyway!? I think the Newent family is correct, some further checking in the Newent Parish records is encouraging.
Can I go further and check for 1871 census records for John Watkins B1818 in Newent and his wife Mary B1806 in Somerset particularly in the Newent or Tidenham areas?
I am particularily looking for any further Somerset birthplace clues for Mary.

From the Tidenham John & Mary in 1841 - John is born within the county but Mary isn't, which is encouraging. But it's confusing because in 1851 there's no sign of them in Tidenham but there is the family then in Newent of John & Mary, father William, and children Comfort, Sarah and Alfred highlighted by 'Bertha' above as a reply to your post. Mary hailing from 'Stoke Owen'? in Somerset (at least thats what the transcription says). Newent is quite a way from Tidenham. there is also another John and Mary in Clifton where the Mary is from Pill in Somerset, but she appears to be much older - born 1799.

Hi Karaka,
Just to help you rule out my John & Mary Watkins in Bishopswood, Ruardean from the 1841 census, should you come across them on your search! I apologise as someone else may be able to help you with a more in-depth detailed search of the 1841 and 1851 census' - but given Mary's age; the closest match may be a John & Mary Watkins, both 35, In Churchend, Tidenham, Gloucestershire. Given that they were married at Awre With Blakeney in 1840; Tidenham is maybe 14 or 15 miles or so round the coast from Blakeney, but on the main road nonetheless! another family of William and Hannah Watkins plus five children are also in Churchend, Tidenham. As I sa,y perhaps someone else can help you with the 1851 census to give you more of a clue as to their children's names tec. (presuming they had children). Good luck.

Looking for any census record in GLS for John Watkins and his wife Mary (nee Thorne)who married in 1840 in the parish of Awre. I believe Mary was born about 1806 in Somerset.
I do not know when John was born and do not know if the family stayed in the Forest of Dean area.
