Thank you for all that information. I had not looked for Baptisms for this family yet.
This is the census for 1871: Snatchwood Road Trevethin Monmouthshire Wales Registration district: Pontypool Archive reference: RG10 Piece number: 5333 Folio: 41 Page: 17

John Fervis - 25 - engine stoker at works, born Gloucestershire (Kempsford)
Sophia Fervis – 24 – dressmaker, born Monmouthshire (Pontypool)
Tom Fervis – 4 – born Gloucestershire (Oldland Common)
Annie M Fervis – 2 – born Gloucestershire (Oldland Common)
George Fervis – 1 month – born Monmouthshire (Abersychan)
Mary A Surdrey, Mother-In-Law, widow – 46 – dressmaker, born Herefordshire (“Longton” = Longtown?)
Samuel Surdrey, boarder – 19 single – stoker, born Gloucestershire (Wick)

For 1871, findmypast doesn't transcribe occupations and only the county where born; so some of what you see represents my version of the truth

Thanks MPGriffiths, I hadn't spotted the consecutive pages of the 1881 census, as I'd researched each separately. I've always thought that the 3 families might be aware of each other in Manchester; their closeness on the census makes that more likely. I have seen the birth certificate of that Edward Sindry and he was the son of Sarah. Edward was born 26 Nov 1868 at Oldlands Common Bitton Gloucs. He died in WW1 in 1917. That was my first post on this forum and am pleased to have such a positive reply! I feel I've drifted from the original topic however; I used Google maps to ascertain that Slowhands could have a point - Pontnewynydd is indeed very close to Trevethin. There is a lovely resource that allows you to view old Ordnance Survey maps - to 6 inch scale, published by the National Library of Scotland: http://maps.nls.uk/os/6inch-england-and-wales/index.html
It has a map published 1886 of the area including Trevethin (surveyed 1879-1881) Worth a look to find places that may have "disappeared"...

I am researching the Sindrey family that you refer to in the 1851 census. I believe that Mary Ann Sindry didn't die in 1865 [as another respondent speculated], she was with her daughter (Sophia Ferris, wife of John) in 1871 at Trevethin Monmouthshire. In 1881 she was with the same family at Cheetham Lancashire, her surname transcribed as "Lindsey" by findmypast. Her daughter Sophia was born before Thomas "Sindry" and Mary Ann (Lodge) married in the last quarter of 1845, so I believe this is her in freebmd: Births Sep 1845 LODGE Sophia Pontypool 26 122. I think I have found Sarah's birth [freebmd: Births Jun 1848 SINDERY Sarah Abergavenny 26 16] but have not found that of siblings George [b~1843] nor Samuel [b~1854] Samuel moves to Manchester too. My particular interest is in following Sarah, who married John Titterington; I'm still searching for that marriage - and her family in 1871.... Regards
