Bicknor's (reply)

Welsh Bicknor is today in Herefordshire, although historically Monmouthshire.

It lies across the river Wye from English Bicknor and Lydbrook.

Welsh Bicknor is associated with the Vaughan family who were Catholic and held Courtfield. Courtfield is "supposed" to be the location where Henry V was brought up before becoming King and going on to Agincourt, others claim he was born at Courtfield.

The Vaughan family is also associated with Ruardean.

The "nor" part of Bicknor is thought to refer to the River bank.

Collafield (reply)

Could you please give correct spelling of Cole Fields, Colafield and other variations?

My preference is COLLAFIELD

Its a very small hamlet north along the ridge of Littledean Hill as it descends down towards Green Bottom.

Edge Hills is nearby.

The area is home to what I have dubbed the "east dean " branch of the Grindles, the line crosses Brain and Hale

BRAIN + PHELPS +HERBERT (reply)

Well Slowhands and Michael Gwilliam, you've really done it this time. At the moment I am working on the Phelps family, or I was until I read the information you kindly posted in reply to my post. You found my missing Phelps and inadvertantly answered another question which has been puzzling us for years. We often wondered if the Brain line in our tree had anything to do with the murder in America of Enos Brain and it seems that he was the brother of Charlotte Brain, who married the John Phelps I am currently researching. This has caused some excitment in the family - an interesting occurance not sure about previous to your assistance. Do you ever sleep?
Having found the relevant census returns, 1871 census states that Silas Phelps is the grandson of James Brain and on 1881 shows Silas again with the addition of Alice Phelps, shown this time as nephew and niece. They are definately the children of John and Charlotte Phelps as shown on other census.
Another query. Could you please give correct spelling of Cole Fields, Colafield and other variations?
English/Welsh Bicknor. I have come across this place several times and find it confusing. Is it a border town, with one half in England and one in Wales? Sometimes given as Welsh Bicnor or Bicknor.
Have just read with interest some other posts by members also researching Herbert/Brain/Phelps families and when I have sorted out who I am next researching, I will contact them. Regards Jean Herbert

Please note that Henders Land is also spelt Hinders Lane and am not certain which is the correct spelling. Any help appreciated and updates welcome from anyone else researching the Phelps ancestry.
