Hello Chris, I don't know whether this is relevant as I cannot find the details necessary to substantiate a link! Eliza Ellis married John Dobbs in Newland 1846 -the census has him born in West Dean about 1818 (32 in 1851, 64 in 1881 - I'm afraid I don't have the other census details). Together they had the following children
Mary Anne chr Newland 13 Aug 1848 and 12 Dec 1858
Dorcas Louisa christened 11 May 1851
William James Christened 11 Nov 1855
John christened 12 Feb 1865
Lydia christened 12 Mar 1865
Emily b abt 1870
William b abt 1873

details from IGI and Census

In the 1841 Census at HO107/365/3/26/9 Pool Green is a
William Dobbs aged 50 Collier
Dorcas 50
William Jr 20
Charlotte 15

...and this may well be his father - but I have no definite link. There's also a William aged 40 married to Jane so perhaps cousins, obviously some access to parish or non-conformist registers would help to find the relationships.
