Deciphering Edward Stockam 1859 marriage record (reply)

I have a copy of Edward Stockam and Esther Smith's marriage record on 14 Feb 1859 at The Lea parish in Hereford/Gloucester. My question has to do with their residence at the time of the marriage. It lists East Dean for each of them. How can I find out the village in which they were located within East Dean? Was there a village named East Dean as well as a township? I thought I saw one listed on a map I was viewing. It was located above Wigpool and to the right of the Hamlet of Lea Bailey. Is that possible?

I just want to see if I can find out were they were living in 1859. In 1861 they are located in Ruardean with their first born son Henry William. In 1863 they are in Cinderford when David was born.

I have a marriage record from 1886 for David Stockam and Eliza Preddy. It lists a specific village "the Pludds" as their residence. That's why I am not sure if the East Dean listed on the marriage record is a village or township.

Thanks for your help.

East Dean is an area rather than a specific village or hamlet....

Holy Trinity Church Drybrook aka "Forest Church" (reply)

Hi,
pleased to see you're getting your history sorted and really glad you're going to visit the Dean. Regarding the Forest Church this prior post may interest you as it has links to a BBC TV programme who filmed in the Dean including at the Church last November. The programme used to be available to watch via the BBC website, but sadly that seems to have expired now, altho maybe its still accessible abroad ??.
http://www.forum.forest-of-dean.net/index.php?mode=thread&id=39065

I've checked Youtube and it's not there (yet..), but there is this rather entertaining clip featuring the local Silver Band (another old Vurrest tradition), you can get some idea of the Church interior.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qnuIOtbGpjI

I've scoured Youtube for a glimpse of the Church, but even this interesting tour of the local roads in all seasons (or was it just June 2012?!) just manages to miss it. If nowt else it give's you an idea what to expect when driving the area, particularly at 5mins 40secs when the sheep take priority outside the Speech House !.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=muNU4GRqFOY

I must get my cousin to post her wedding homemovie on Youtube. She's a Drybrook girl so was married at Forest Church in "the hot summer" of 1976. Her bridal car was a surprise horse-drawn carriage, I recall it was a bit hairy as the horse slipped a few times on the steepish Harrow Hill to the Church, and particularly to the reception up at Euroclydon House, now a nursing home. A lovely day. Apparently in years past it was normal for the churchgoers of my home town Bilson aka Woodside now Cinderford to walk thro the woods and upto the Church, it being built in 1817 well before Cinderford existed as such never mind had Churches.

Re your visit these prior threads may be of some guidance, apologies if you've already searched them out.
http://www.forum.forest-of-dean.net/index.php?id=36291
http://www.forum.forest-of-dean.net/index.php?id=33227

Enjoy your visit, hope the sun shines (autumn's often very good, honest!)

PS we sympathise & understand your problems relating to the local area place names and how they've evolved over the years. I grewup there yet still found it hardgoing when I started my FH research a few years ago !
And wrt your PREDDY name, my father's line is from the Pludds area of Lydbrook, and there's a Preedy girl in the mix, Rebecca born 1855 to John(not yours) & Sarah. Irrespective of the various ways of spelling Rebekkah, I've seen Preedy spelt in Census' and PRs in almost all these variations, no wonder your branch moved to the USA !! (Preedy, Preddy, Predy, Predey, Preedey, Priedy, Priddy, Priddey, Priday, Pryday, Pridday, and even Prideaux !!).

I can not seem to locate Woodside East Dean which is listed on a copy of the birth register entry for my greatgrandfather David John Stockam. He was born 28 Oct 1863.

There are a few Woodsides in East Dean - Ruardean and Littledean for starters

I'll try to understand the broad context - but instinct says Littledean Woodside or Cinderford. ( also known as Bilson Green)
http://www.geograph.org.uk/showmap.php?gridref=SO6414

http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1456394

So in 1861 census they are in Ruardean

1861 Ruardean
Edward Stockam abt 1839 East Brant [BRENT], Somerset, England Head Ruardean, Gloucestershire
Esther Stockam abt 1840 East Dean, Gloucestershire, England Wife Ruardean, Gloucestershire
William H Stockam abt 1860 East Dean, Gloucestershire, England Son Ruardean, Gloucestershire

by 1863 I believe that they have moved to the Cinderford area

In the later 19th century Cinderford's development centred on the hillside east of Bilson in the area known at that time as Woodside, (fn. 48) Littledean Woodside, or Bilson Woodside. (fn. 49) Building had begun there before 1782, when eight cottages were standing on encroachments on the edge of the royal demesne in the area of the later Heywood Road. (fn. 50) At the same time cottages were built on extraparochial land to the east in Dockham Road (formerly Hinder's Lane) and higher up on Littledean hill, (fn. 51) and in 1832 there were c. 86 cottages at and above Woodside. (fn. 52) The settlement of Littledean Hill, on a ridge overlooking Littledean to the east, also included cottages on land belonging to Littledean parish and Lea Bailey tithing. (fn. 53) The Royal Forester inn near the Forest keeper's lodge called Latimer Lodge was recorded from 1838 (fn. 54) and, further south, a chapel was built in 1824 (fn. 55) and an inn called the Royal Oak had opened by 1838. (fn. 56) The oldest dwelling on the hill was possibly a farmhouse standing at the east end of Dockham Road in 1797, in the area known later as Dockham and within Flaxley parish. (fn. 57) To the south at St. White's there were one or two cottages on Crown land adjoining the Littledean-Coleford road by the late 1760s (fn. 58) and a public house had opened there, in the area called Mount Pleasant, by 1841. (fn. 59)

Albert William STOCKHAM/STOCKAM 1887 ? (reply)

I was reading your response more closely and wondered about the birth of Albert William Stockham in 1887 Forest of Dean, Monmouth Coleford, mother's name Preddy. You gave the gloucestershire.gov.uk/bmd web address and I was able to find the birth, but I don't know what happened to him. I can't find him in death records, but to my knowledge his brother born in May 1888 was the oldest child. I can't find the immigration record for David Stockham and Eliza Preddy Stockham. Perhaps the child is on that and then died in the States. How can I find out when David and Eliza Stockham immigrated and what happened to the child named Albert William Stockham? I appreciate any help you can give me.

David STOCKHAM 1844 Somerset -> NY State (reply)

Thank you all so much. It really does tie together now and answers other questions we had about the other David & Sarah Stockham living so close by. We thought the two families may have been related only one used Stockham with an "h" and the other didn't. I noted in the census they had a nephew living with them named Henry but we didn't know where he fit in. We didn't realize his whole name was Henry William. We had recorded the oldest brother of David John as William H. And actually thought perhaps he had died. We didn't realize he went by Henry.
You have answered so many questions for me and helped me to determine exactly where I will visit when I come to England this fall. I want to see the places where my ancestors came from and you have helped me to pinpoint those areas in Gloucestershire and fill in the gaps in my genealogy history. Also I have had a chance to read about the wonderful areas around the Forest of Dean and view the beautiful countryside and churches on line. Thank you.

Ages (reply)

Thank you once again. I guess the what keeps coming to mind is why Eliza Preddy (1868) and David John Stockam (1863) birthdates don't coincide with the birthdates on their grave stones here in the states (1870 and 1866). I think I have the right families but it puts a little doubt in my mind. Why wouldn't the dates be the same? I know from my mother that her grandfather David John Stockam married an Eliza Preddy in England and then came to America. I was always told they had eloped. Should I keep looking for other possibilities or accept the information I have as proof? How do I account for the variances in dates?
Thank you

It all looks to fit even given the variations

many people claim to get younger as in fact they get older :-)

Locations (reply)

Thank you once again. I guess the what keeps coming to mind is why Eliza Preddy (1868) and David John Stockam (1863) birthdates don't coincide with the birthdates on their grave stones here in the states (1870 and 1866). I think I have the right families but it puts a little doubt in my mind. Why wouldn't the dates be the same? I know from my mother that her grandfather David John Stockam married an Eliza Preddy in England and then came to America. I was always told they had eloped. Should I keep looking for other possibilities or accept the information I have as proof? How do I account for the variances in dates?
Thank you

STOCKHAM/STOCKAM + HARRIS + SMITH (reply)

Thank you for your most thorough and speedy reply.
I made an error on my original entry. The grave stone markers for David John and Eliza (Preddy) Stockam list 1866 as David's birth year but the only English records I could find and that you have so kindly confirmed list it as 1863. Likewise Eliza's birth year is listed on the stone as 1870, but the only English records I could find with John as the father were listed as 1868 in West Dean, Gloucestershire, but also lists town of Worral Hill and Monmouthshire. I believe the parish was Holy Jesus. Needless to say I am confused....Can you make any sense of this? Would it have anything to do with the family rumors of them eloping? Thanks

STOCKAM / PREDDY families (reply)

I was able to locate their marriage record through Ancestry.com and sent for a copy. I am trying to decipher the information on the document. The marriage is dated March 27,1886. At the top of the entry it says the marriage was solemized at Dean Forest in the district of Holy Trinity in the county of Gloucester. David John Stockham is listed as a coal miner aged 21 living in The Pludds at the time of marriage. His father is listed as Edward Stockham, a coal miner.
Eliza Preddy is aged 17 also living in The Pludds at the time of marriage. Her father is listed as John Preddy, a coal miner.
