Not sure about the 1901 census. There is an Edith GEE - age 36 - born Horsley, Northumberland - listed working as a Nurse in Cambridgeshire at the Addenbrooke's Hospital. Above her is listed, Constance Mary ROWE - age 26, born Mitcheldean, Glos (where Edith was christened) - is this a mix-up??

So the nearest Hospital might have been the Dilke- which was founded about the right time for Annice to have had an impact....

I have an L H BOLTON down as Matron in 1926.

Following the death of the Forest's Member of Parliament Sir Charles Dilke in 1911, fund raising commenced to establish a local community hospital. The need for such a facility within the Forest had long been recognised as, prior to its completion, injured miners or other members of the public were taken to Gloucester Infirmary for hospital treatment, often with fatal results en route.

The Dilke Memorial Hospital was built as a permanent memorial to the popular M.P. on a site near to the old Lightmoor Colliery close to Cinderford.

The hospital first opened its doors in 1923 and was run for many years from funds raised by public subscription paid by local people.

"The Dilke", as it is popularly known, now nestles in the heart of the Forest of Dean, and provides a range of traditional community hospital services to the local communities.

I've found the piece of paper with my father's notes from the conversation.

"Died in Drybrook - possible Hope Mansel Hospital - outskirts of Forest of Dean. Had been a Governor of Hospital (possible plaque)... Was Hospital Matron."

But you've kundly been able to confirm for me that there is no Hope Mansel Hospital - I'd suspected that. But the workhouse in Ross seems to have been still a workhouse proper until in closed in 1930. Certainly on the 1911 census its residents are inmates - elderly 'imbeciles', etc. And on the 1911 census Annice is described as a midwife working at home on her own account - It seems a big leap from being a middle-aged home midwife to a hospital governor of a hospital I can't find for certain.

So at the moment I'm not inclined to give much weight to the governor/matron/plaque business without a bit more proof. If it is true, I would imagine there would have been some sort of notice in the local paper? And a grave with an extant stone, perhaps...

Check on all those records - but it's always nice to get a second opinion. The 'Levia Greenway' in one of those gives a tenuous link to the fabulously rich Beecham's pharmecautical empire, but no money for us, alas...

And special thanks for the geography info. Is it possible to say at this remove: how 'posh' was it? It looks pretty idyllic for a miner...

Hi there - she is Annice Blanche Cale - I've got her nailed on Ancestry and through a few family documents.

That death record seems the most likely, but all my grandmother could say was that he survived his wife and 'moved to the Midlands'. I have his approx year of birth as 1862, so the age would fit...

This Drybrook is the one between Mitcheldean and Ruardean

In 1911 their address is just 'The Hawthorns, Drybrook'

The Hawthorns is an area just to the north of the village centre, on the way to the Euroclydon and Hope Mansell

In 1927 when my grandmother stayed, she said their address was Holly Cottage

Is this Thomas GREENWAY age 73 - burial at Hope Mansel 25 April 1935

I have just joined - although I've been following family history elsewhere around the country. I'm now trying to follow a thread that my late father had started on, based upon memoirs from my grandmother. But she had delusions of grandeur so of course the records and the memoirs don't always match!

In c1927 she went to stay with relatives THOMAS WILLIAM GREENWAY and ANNICE BLANCHE GREENWAY in Drybrook.

Annice was a midwife - and that's how she shows up on the censuses - though my grandmother claimed she was a matron, and describes her as some sort of local hero, well-known in the area. She died in Nov 1929 and my grandmother talked of some sort of memorial or commemoration at Hope Mansel church or hospital. I've found the parish burial record on this for Annie (sic) Greenway on 7 Nov, so that fits - but is there really a memorial, I wonder. Does anyone know?

And I'd love some insight into the address, as I'm finding it hard to track the places online (I'm in Scotland.)

Can anyone help me unpick how close these places are, and what sort of homes they would have been at the time. I notice there's a Greenway Farm campsite at Drybrook - coincidence?
