Oooooh Pam, I thought I was going to lose you as a cousin for a while then.

This won't confirm your Giles/James dilema one way or the other but....on another branch of my family tree in Lancashire I have a similar scenario which took a long long time to resolve. I spent two years looking for a marriage of an Ann Higson, everything I had said Higson, birth certificate, census information in fact she definitely was Ann Higson. Only the vicar at her wedding was perhaps a little deaf, and maybe she had a strong Wigan accent but on her marriage certificate she is Ann NIXON. Just say Ann Higson and Ann Nixon out loud and you will see what I mean.

Thanks slowhands, very good point especially as George called his son Giles as well and not James. I'm going to ask a big favour would it be possible to have a quick look on the 1841 census and see if there is a James Griffiths with a son George born 1832/3 with a brother Thomas brn 1837/8. If there isn't I think I will safely be able to keep my 5 generations and my sanity.
Many thanks for your trouble
Pam

Then I guess it may be down to the "you hear what you expect to hear" syndrome, Giles would be a very rare christian name in Wales - approx 60 in 1851 census ( against 2,000 in the England 1851 census). Whereas James ....25,000 in Wales ( vs 700,000 in England).

Thanks for reply slowhands, no the wedding took place in Wales, we have been going around the house muttering Giles in a Welsh accent!
I really think that the evidence is pretty overwhelming that Giles was the father. I can't find the birth on parish registers but will keep looking.
Thanks

Did George's wedding take place "up north" ?

If so the Vicar/registrar may have mis heard a Vorest of Dean "Jyles" as "James" and recorded it so .
< try to imagine how a person used to Geordie who hear a Vorest accent >

Gile/James Griffiths

Please can someone help me before I lose 5 generations on my family tree.( and turn to drink)
In slowhands post of 24 Oct 2005 he shows the 1841 census showing Giles 40 Sarah 45 Mary 20 James 15 Ann 10 George 8? Henry 6 Thomas 4 and Giles 1.
In my tree working up I know my George was born 1832/3 in the Forest of Dean and had a brother Thomas brn 1837/8, they both went to the same place in Northumberland abt 1870 something.
I have rightly or wrongly linked them to Giles and Sarah of the 1841 census.
A relative in New Zealand has obtained Georges marriage cert which I know is correct because of his wifes name, on it he states father JAMES!
George named his sons Evan, Thomas and Giles.( no James)
Another brother on the 1841 census Henry moved to Northumberland.
Any advice on how to solve this would be very much appreciated.
Pam
