Surname - Rembridge (Tibberton) (reply)

The National Trust website presents the findings of a project based at University College London (UCL) that is investigating the distribution of surnames in Great Britain, both current and historic. It allows users to search the databases that they have created, and to trace the geography and history of their family names.

There needed to be at least 100 people with the name on the Electoral Register in 1998 to be in the database.

The names Rembridge and Kembridge are not in the database.

Surname - Rembridge (Tibberton) (reply)

Hello

I have the Cambridge surname in my family tree they are from Cheltenham and Gloucester. As you go back in time I've noticed the name is spelt occasionally with a K as Kembridge. Never seen Rembridge but a flowery hand-written capital K and a capital R can easily be confused.

KEMBRIDGE -> CAMBRIDGE ? (reply)

If we assume Kembridge is the correct transcription, then given the levels of literacy and a little imagination, perhaps the surname was CAMBRIDGE with the C being pronounced as a hard C ... K....

Surname - Rembridge (Tibberton)

Hello

Have come across an ancestor, Mary Rembridge, marrying Edward Rogers in Tibberton. The surname Rembridge seems a bit unusual and I can't find any other entries for it in the listed records, nor any other local parish records I can access. Have checked on another online copy of Tibberton registers and the surname is shown as Kembridge but there are no other entries for this name either!
Has anyone else come across this name in the course of their research?

Regards
Ceri Lewis
