Josiah [Joseph] Low[e] of Blakeney (reply)

Thank you again m p griffiths. The Jabez Lowe in Bristol you mention was a hatter (just like the Jabez Lowe in London)and his father was a Joseph who lived in Pensford (Publow). I know of the Bristol Jabez and his family, we think they descend from the Low(e)s of Winterbourne (Richard & Rebecca, feltmakers) through Jabez' father Joseph but that has yet to be proved conclusively.

The Joseph I need to trace now is the father of the London Jabez, Joseph the shipwright. Joseph is named as a shipwright on the certificate for Jabez' second mariage. From IGI Joseph's wife was Harriet, they lived in Rotherhithe when their sons John, Jabez and Joseph were born (from birth records in 1851 census). My challenge is to find out where their father Joseph came from and where he married Harriot, possibly in Rotherhithe around 1805 + or -. They seem to have died by the 1841 census. I mentioned the Joseph and Harriet in Portsea/Portsmouth because there were RN dockyard links between Portsmouth and Rotherhithe but it now looks as though the couple at Portsmouth were a different family just as the Joseph & Harriet frm Blakeney do too.

I am aware that this is now not a Forest of Dean project so although grateful for the help perhaps I should not take any more of your time on this forum?

Thanks again,

Lawrence

Josiah [Joseph] Low[e] of Blakeney (reply)

Hello again,

I forgot to mention, the later Lowes you mentioned are the family descended from Josiah/Joseph Lowe from Blakeney, another family with a Joseph and Harriet; these were the whitesmiths and the ones I think might have lived in Portsmouth in the 1810 to 1820 period.

Josiah [Joseph] Low[e] of Blakeney (reply)

Thank you, that fills in some gaps. I discovered earlier today that my membership of Ancestry does not let me see the London Registers, must do something about that.

I had found the entries you mention on IGI but without the added detail of address and occupations so thank you for that. According to IGI the Jabez, son of Jabez, you mention died a year later. I wonder if the group baptism was due to infant Jabez being sickly? Joseph and Jabez were born in Rotherhithe but I have no access to those registers to see if they were baptised previously. I now need to trace the father's, Joseph the shipwright, origins but it is not looking likely that it was the Forest of Dean.

Thank you for the inputs.

Whitesmith as opposed to blacksmith (reply)

I was interested to know what a whitesmith was, so have looked it up. It was someone who worked with tin, enamel, light metals, etc. This ties in with the area's industry, whether immediately local or in South Wales. I have found several of my extended F of D family, if not engaged as blacksmiths worked in the tin industry.

Josiah [Joseph] Low[e] of Blakeney (reply)

Hello again Paul,

Your reply from last year:

Josiah Low identified by slowhands is the same as the Joseph you have found as a Whitesmith in the 1851 and 1861 census. Josiah married Harriet Bugby c1801 and they had eleven children. I have no record of a Jabez Lowe born to Josiah and Harriet.<<

Early last year you kindly replied to a request I made for information about a Joseph Lowe (wife Harriet) who lived and worked in London as a "whitesmith". I've been away from my research for a while but am now getting back to it. I now have three Joseph Lowes married to Harriets around that time so I need to separate them out. You told me your Joseph did not have a child named Jabez but did have 11 chldren; were these children born/baptised in Portsea by any chance? Would you mind giving me their names so that I can "eliminate them from my equiries" so to speak?

Best regards,
Lawrence Lowe

Slowhands, Paul, thank you.

Interesting, it seems I have a Jabez Lowe in London born to a different Joseph Lowe and Harriet to the one you are both describing. I am awaiting the marriage certificate of Jabez which will hopefully provide some more information to clear this up. Thanks again.

Joseph Lowe of Blakeney

Hello, I'm new to this forum and just beginning to look at the Lowe family links in the area.

I'm a Lowe descended from Lowes from Winterbourne in Gloucestershire and have a brick-wall at my gr-gr-grandfather's parents. My gr-gr-grandfather was Thomas Low(e), a hatter, born in 1805 possibly in Winterbourne. I've researched the Winterbourne Lowes for some time and found no link.

I am now researching a Joseph Lowe who lived in London and had a son, Jabez Lowe (a hatter) in London. Joseph gives his birthplace as Blakeney in 1851 and Forest of Dean in 1861. Joseph would have been born around 1778. Does anyone recognise Joseph as a part of their tree? I am looking for possible links between the Winterbourne Lowes and Blakeney area or directly with Thomas.

Lawrence
