The Priory/Lidbrook Farm,Lower Lydbrook (reply)

From the description is it possible that the three arch bridge with the railway running under it and a ruined castle in the background is the road bridge over the Wye at Goodrich?. Is the drawing necessarily of where he lived?. It is many years since I visited that area.

Lower Lydbrook (reply)

I wonder if the viewpoint is the Courtfield side of the river looking across toward the Courtfield arms, perhaps nr Courtfield House.

You would see the brick archs of the Railway Viaduct, and with a little license the old Incline / dramway.

If this is so The Priory might be in the far distance

The Priory/Lidbrook Farm,Lower Lydbrook (reply)

My Ma was a PROBERT and I grew up in Lydbrook.

The 'dramroad' (sic) carried mineral trucks near the viaduct but I don't think they could have been seen passing under it from any angle. Artistic licence?

No fortifications nearby either, so I doubt it ia the Old Priory.

Sorry, I can't find a photo of it.

The Priory/Lidbrook Farm,Lower Lydbrook (reply)

I'm in the early stages of my Probert family research. My grandfather Frederick Probert was born 1861 in Osbaston, Monmouth where his parents Henry & Mary were farming. Henry was born c1820 in Lydbrook & his father was Thomas.
I have a pencil drawing by Frederick dated 1876 of a farmhouse adjoining what looks like part of a ruined castle or fortified building. In the distance are three arches of a bridge with a train passing under the bridge. It could be a mineral tramway. I wonder whether this could be The Priory.

The Priory/Lidbrook Farm,Lower Lydbrook (reply)

I have just sent a will written by Thomas Probert 1825, to FOD for transcribing and will shortly be on the web. At this stage I believe Thomas was the owner of the farm and his brother William Probert, infamous for his involvement of the murder of William Weare of Radlett. If you search on Google books you will be able to read the whole story which also contains pictures of William Probert.
If you look under miscellaneous documents- Wiiliam Probert on the FOD site you can see the story of the demise of William and his hanging in 1825 after stealing a horse from William Meredith of Ruardean.

The Priory/Lidbrook Farm,Lower Lydbrook (reply)

I just googled the Priory at Lydbrook & found the following on Wikipedia

The Priory
The oldest surviving building in Lydbrook is today known as The Priory, which in fact had never been a Priory, but was originally known as Lidbrook Farm. Once the home of the Probert family. The architectural design requires a date in the mid-1500s for this building, owing to the close timbered framework when oak was more plentiful, as opposed to square timbered style of the later period. There is a secret room in this building and claims for tunnels extending from Courtfield and the Anchor Inn. A Priest hole has been argued for, but smuggling has been suggested as an alternative. The house is also reputed to be haunted.

The Priory/Lidbrook Farm,Lower Lydbrook

I am trying to trace the Probert family who farmed in Lydbrook in 18/19th century.
I believe they may have farmed The Priory. Does the building still exist?
I would welcome any information.
