A William Matthews / Mathews 1777-1858 from this family emigrated to India in 1795 under patronage of Sir John Shore, Director HEIC and was awarded land to cultivate Indigo . The business flourished however due to the Mutiny/ Uprising In Jaunpore circa 1857 / 58 William and family were chased out from their estate had to flee to Calcutta.
