George WORGAN 1885 - 1961 (reply)

Yep, that's my mother's family
My grandfather George Worgan was living in Cinderford, working as a miner when he joined up in 1915
He was blinded in January 1917 from a shrapnel wound at Ypres
He came back to Cinderford via Soudley and was set up in a mat-making shop by St Dunstan's in Commercial St, opposite the Soldiers and Sailors club in 1918.

I mentioned the Roberts family of Cinderford in a previous post on here in an effort to make a guess at which colliery my grandfather was working at in 1911.

Can't be sure, but Lightmoor looks the most likely, as that was where some of the Roberts boys worked.

My mother mentions Mrs Roberts in her book as the local mid-wife and nurse for Cinderford. Whether she knew that her family had lodged with the Roberts's in Belle Vue Road before she was born, I don't know.

James WORGAN born c 1853 -1929 Bilston (reply)

Yes that's my family in Longton after a spell in Yorkshire

My maternal grandfather was George Worgan b 1886

He moved his family down to Cinderford around 1910 so my mother, born 1911, was the first of the family to be born in the Forest for quite some time. She describes her grandfather James Worgan b1854 visiting them in Cinderford in her book.

I'm still trying to get my head round all the comings and goings.

By contrast, the Duberleys stayed in Ruardean, which makes researching their history much simpler. :-)

Thomas WORGAN born 1813 Five Acres (reply)

Hi Slowhands,

Yes the marriage you found is the right one :-

1852 Q4 Wolverhampton
Thomas Worgan and Mary Ann Haspy ( is this Astbury ?)

First name(s) Mary Ann
Spouse's father's first name(s) John
Last name Haspy
Spouse's father's last name Worgan
Birth year 1823
Denomination Anglican
Age 29
Place Wednesfield, St Thomas
Residence Wednesfield
County Staffordshire
Year 1852
Country England
Date 28 Nov 1852

The father's surname is variously spelt Aspy, Haspy and Astbury. They were all illiterate, so the spelling was left to whoever wrote the certificates.

I have a copy of what I think is the Parish register entry for the marriage, not much extra info on it.
TW bachelor 39, MAH spinster 29 - TW a collier, his father a miner, Samson Haspy a farmer - bride and groom both living in Wednesfield. Married by banns - both mark rather than sign. The witnesses are John Naylor and Harriet Naylor.

Thanks for having a look at this for me.

Thomas Worgan born 1813 Five Acres

I have been trying to work out the approximate date my ancestor Thomas Worgan left the FoD and where he went. He was born in 1813, and as you can see from his brother William's baptism, the family lived at Five Acres near Coleford.

In the 1841 census, Thomas's parents are still living in the same place, as is William, but Thomas has gone. Thomas reappears in Wednesfield, Staffordshire in 1852 when he marries Mary Ann Haspy.

In short, I'm missing Thomas from the 1841 and 1851 censuses. I assume he moved to the Stoke-on-Trent area to get better paid work, but it would be nice to have some proof of this.

Cheers - Nick
