Mary Pullen b. 1860 - Family - Tomblins Ditch (reply)

Thanks to you both for your help. I get the general drift of the area and will have to do some more research from yr guidance. Let's face it, it was never going to stick as a district name; doesn't have quite the same ring as Royal Parade does it ;-)

You have also helped me back in time as well.

Tomblins Ditch (reply)

"Where is Tomblins Ditch?"

Well it's part of the Enumeration District comprising Joyford, Joyford
Hill, The Lonk, Tomblins Ditch, The Mire, Speedwell Pit, Hawthornes
and Hawthornes Tump .

Today the Lonk , Joyford and Five Acres are in the
Christchurch/Berry Hill area, just about a mile north
of Coleford.

My "feeling" is in the area of Nine Wells, between the Lonk
and Speedwell Colliery

http://www.old-maps.co.uk/
co ords 358100, 212600

<Mike G. any offers ?>

Mary Pullen b. 1860 - Family - Tomblins Ditch

Researching my great grandmother's descendency. Believe I have found Abijal Mary Pullen b. 1860 in Coleford. For some time have looked for her in Coleford in England without realising Coleford is in Monmouth, Wales for registration purposes. Have traced her back to her father and mother. Thomas b. abt 1817, Road, Somerset and Fanny Unknown (as yet)b. 1828 in West Dean. These facts strike good note because grandfather James Caleb Johns, I never met. However, both his forenames are handed down; James from Johnses and Caleb from Pullens. I note that in 1851 Census Thomas, Fanny and daughter Elizabeth live in West Dean (Coleford, Newland area) in Tomblins Ditch.

What was/is Tomblins Ditch? Is it still a feature? Can I visit it? Can it really be as basic as it sounds?

A bemused Monmouth Johns.
