Hi there!

Thanks for replying! I was actually contacted by a very distant Gammage relation from 23andMe and it got me chasing rabbits, so to speak. My name is Mary Ellen. I live in Michigan, though grew up in Georgia. My Great Grandfather, Deodatus, moved to Georgia when I was still pretty little but he passed when I was 13. My grandmother, his daughter, Joyce, still lives in the house he bought! I'd love to know more about my family as my grandmother is the last living of the Gammages that I know and she is well in to her 80s. Please email me smithersme@yahoo.com.

Thanks!

My Great grandfather was Albert Edwin Gammage on my mothers side he had 8 children by the names of Albert W., Deodatus D, Thomas M., Daisy, Elizabeth, Agnes, Charlotte and Alice. The family moved from London by ship when Albert Edwin was a child and ended up settling in Arkansas and later moved to Miami, FL. in 1921. My mother was the daughter of Albert W. Gammage. All of this sounds like we may be related, what do you think?

1881 census ??? (reply)

According to Uncle Tom's story, the family moved back to London when he was only six weeks old (Late July or early August 1874). He mentions living at 40 Bryant Street, near Kender Primary School and having adventures at Wandsworth Common. His father, Deodatus, was an inspector for the London Tramway Company.

Later, after the birth of sister Bessie and brother Dick, they moved to a "more fashionable neighborhood" and a larger home at 35 Old Kent Road and he includes a picture.

At the point where they were making plans to cross the Atlantic, he mentions his father's sister "Aunt Payne." It is the only time he speaks of her and I have no idea who she is. Is it possible that Payne is her married name?

The time lines that Uncle Tom uses in his memoirs (he says they came in the summer of 1880) don't always match the facts that we have been finding in census records and the Persian Monarch records. But I keep telling myself that he was 80 years old when he wrote this book.

Add the fact that after they arrived in the states they became virtual vagabonds. After the death of their father in Judsonia, Arkansa, USA about a year or so after they arrived, their mother fostered most of her children out to neighbors, friends and "family."

In his teen age years he worked odd jobs, here and there. He speaks of working as a cook in Chicago, Illinois at the time of the Exposition.

Uncle Tom tells that after attending one year of school in London, he was not able to get back to his education until he was in his twenties. Eventually he became a doctor.

Elizabeth Rogers + Gamage (getting there....) (reply)

In his memoirs, Uncle Tom relates that his mother was the daughter of "farmer Rogers, the Squire of Roger's Grange," and that the Gamages owned a neighboring hunting preserve. Elizabeth and Deodatus were married in the spring of 1868 according to his story, but the register shows that they were married in 1867.

I always have to keep in mind the fact that Uncle Tom is eighty yearrs old when he writes these memories. Later, he tells that after being widowed, his mother received a $300 legacy, in 1884, which came to her from the death of her brother John in England. The 1851 UK census that you posted only shows one brother, Thomas.

Henry Gamage 1813 Hereford , (reply)

The 1871 census is amusing. Deodakis? That would be Deodatus. This is the first time that I have ever seen anything that tells me where Elizabeth (Rogers) Gamage was born.

Thomas should not be in this census -- he was not born until 1874, by his own accounts. Jane was the eldest, then my great-grandfather Deodatus John, born 1868 in Hereford. Next came Albert and then Tom.

In the passenger list from the Persian Monarch (1881, when they emigrated) it shows the family listed as follows;
Henry - 60 (?), D.C.R. - 29, Mrs. D.C.R. - 28, Jane - 11, John - 10, Albert - 8, Edwin - 6, Elizabeth - 3 and Rosalie - 2.

From Uncle Tom's memoirs I have it that Tom was 6 years old when they came to America. I believe that Edwin is actually Albert's middle name and I have no idea who Rosalie is. There should have been another brother, Richard or Dick, listed and a sister Agnes.

You posted the 1900 US census, Manhattan New York. John H. Gamage, head of household is my great-grandfather (Deodatus John or John Deodatus). Agnes, daughter , born 1899 is my grandmother. And you see another Agnes (sister) listed. Strange how these things are listed.

Gamage's department store first opened in Holborn, London, in 1878. It sold affordable, high quality domestic goods,
and produced cram-packed catalogues with which shoppers could order items for home delivery. The store also offered
an international shipping service that allowed goods to be sent 'throughout the empire'. Many of these catalogues
focused on particular types of products such as picnic baskets, bee keeping appliances, magic tricks, or motoring
accessories. By the early 20th century, Gamage's was one of London's best known stores.

Arthur Walter Gamage was the son of a Herefordshire farmer who was apprenticed to a London draper in St.Paul's churchyard. In 1878 at the age of 21 and having saved £40 equivalent to at least £2,500 today he decided to set up his own shop in partnership with Frank Spain.

Between them they raised the £88 necessary to lease and fit a small watch repair shop in Holborn. The owner assured them that a hosiery shop would do well in the area. The frontage was no more than five feet and above it Gamage hung his motto "Tall Oaks from Little Acorns Grow".The partners lived in the back room of the shop and allowed themselves no more than fourteen shillings a week for their living expenses,

Gamage insisted on selling everything cheaper than anywhere else and gradually crowds began to visit the shop even though the area was unfashionable. By the end of the first year trading had grown to £1,632.In 1881 Gamage bought Spain out and began to expand the premises by buying the small properties that surrounded his original shop. By the end of the decade most of the block between Leather Lane and Hatton Gardens was in his hands. Because of the piecemeal expansion his Department Store ended up as a maze of rooms steps passages and ramps which Gamage now called the People's Popular Emporium.

And it was popular with children and adults alike who experienced something of an adventure as they wandered through the warren in search of bargains. It offered a very wide selection of goods including haberdashery furniture sporting goods gardening supplies and utensils camping equipment and clothing. Gamage went on to become the official supplier of uniforms to the Boy Scout movement and continued to expand.

A large zoological department and a toy department were joined by a motor department where one could even purchase a motor car and all the equipment required for running it. One of the largest departments was that devoted to pedal-bicycles and motorcycles. In 1911 49 pages of his 900 page catalogue were devoted to bicycles.

Gamage died in 1930 and tradition has it that he lay in state in the cycle department with a guard of honour made up of members of his staff.
The premises closed in March 1972 and disappeared in the massive redevelopment scheme which now occupies the site.
