I have just discovered that my great great grandfather Thomas ROBERTS married Ann SAILWELL. I have copy of their marriage on 22nd May 1848. St Pauls church NEWLAND
I understand Ann was the only child of William and Sarah SAILWELL
Ann was orphaned after her father murdered her mother around 1829, when she was about three years old. I have a copy of baptism of Ann 15th August 1826, also at St Paul's church.
Who did Ann live with until old enough to marry my great great grandfather?
I have also recently gained copies of Gloucester Summer Assizes for May 1829 showing William SAILWELLalias SULLY conviction for murder.

Hi Carole, I have been researching the Roberts family.
My link is Annie Roberts b. 1858 in coleford, daughter of Richard and Louisa. She was my GGrandmother.
I was interested to read of a family diary. Could you expand upon it - for example - is it pubblished or is it just in the family possesion.

Thanks Slowhands I do have all this. I am looking for Ann Sailwell/Salewell between 1829 when she is three and 1848 when she married Thomas Roberts. I haven't found her on the 1841 census yet. Possibly because of the scandal she was called James - her mother's maiden name. But then did people worry about such things at that time?

It was the census with Ann giving place of birth as Lydney that sent me looking around Lydney.

In transcription 1851 Aylburton

However in later census they appear as Coldwell

I have looked at 1837 BMD and I have to say the bride looks like Sailwell, although there has been an amendment to the line above so it could be Saidwell -very limited in alternatives unless the list has been compiled with errors either side as well.

There were Seysell's in the Blakeney area perhaps this is the family name.

Sailwell is a rare surname , I have seen Sallwell in London/ South East so I'd want to be happy with the surname on the Marriage Cert/ record have you applied for it - you may get some more info to help pinpoint who this is

Yes, this is the Roberts family. According to a family diary Ann Sailwell was born 25 July 1826. She died 20 January 1907
