Further to your information on 1841 Census for James Brain (thank you). Had a look at the census and on the previous page to the entry for James (page 3) is the following entry on page 1:

John Brain Head occ: Looks like "Colliery Bailiff"age 30 born abt 1811 Glouces
Lucinda Brain Wife age 30 born abt 1811 Gloucestershire
John Brain Son age 7 born abt 1834 Gloucestershire
Ann Brain Dau age 5 born abt 1836 Gloucestershire
Tom Brain Son age 1 born abt 1840 Gloucestershire.

I have a Thomas Brain born abt 1845 East Dean, married to Lydia Herbert. On 1851 Census for East Dean I found a James Brain born abt 1803 in Little Dean - married to Agnes ? born abt 1816 East Dean. Amongst other children it shows a Thomas Brain born abt 1842 East Dean. Can anyone tell me if this is the same family or have I gone off track? Is James Thomas's father? Regards Jean Herbert
