James MATTHEWS 1811 - 1858 (reply)

Thanks Slowhands

I didn't have the baptism for Sarah Matthews, or the 1841 Census. The latter brings forth a question regarding the Elizh abt 1826 as this is 3 years before their marriage, and would have died before the next Elizabeth was born in 1847 as per 1851 Census.

1841
James Mathews abt 1811 Gloucestershire, England Dean Forest, Gloucestershire
Elizabeth Mathews abt 1801 Gloucestershire, England Dean Forest, Gloucestershire
Elizh Mathews abt 1826 Gloucestershire, England Dean Forest, Gloucestershire
Sarah Mathews abt 1830 Gloucestershire, England Dean Forest, Gloucestershire
Elizh Mathews abt 1833 Gloucestershire, England Dean Forest, Gloucestershire

MATTHEWS James 41 Coal Miner Dean Forest
Elizabeth 49 Dean Forest
Eliza 18 Newland
Benjamin 8 East Dean
Elizabeth 4 East Dean

There is an Elizabeth Matthews buried Westbury on Severn 21 May 1847 age 10,so I reckon the Elizh Matthews 1826 was actually Elizh 1837 who died 1847, just before the next Elizabeth comes along in 1847.

It would be good to establish who were the parents of James Matthews 1810 as his marriage to Elizabeth Marfell makes him one of my GGG Grandfathers.

To add to the thread; Sarah Jane Matthews 1830 married George Barnard 1825, a prominent member of the Liberal Party.
Benjamin Matthews 1843 married Tryphena Wilce 1840.

Esther Dubberley baptised 25th January 1789 had an illegitimate son James in 1811, she married William Matthews in 1813, he must have died before 1851, but the entry you have for 1835 must be wrong as he would have been 43 not 67.

I don't know when Esther married John Wilce, but certainly before 1851 as per the 1851 Census :

1851 Census East Dean

1861 Census East Dean RG9 1754 179
John wilce 64 Coal Miner Gorsley Herefordshire
Hester 71 Ruardean

I have the marriage certificate of William Matthews & Esther's son Ephraim to Elizabeth Marfell on 16 Apr 1853, Father William is shown as deceased.

Duberley/Matthews (reply)

William Matthews b. ca 1795 was my 4X's great grandfather. I am descended through his son, Elijah, b. 1819 in Ruardean, and then through Elijah's son, Thomas, b. 1845 in Ruardean. My great grandfather, Thomas Reed Matthews, b. 1867, came to the U.S. in 1891. I, too, believe that the William who married Hester/Esther Duberly in English Bicknor in 1813 was my ancestor. However, I am not certain that the Hester/Esther born to John and Betty Duberly was the same person who married William. Does anyone have documentation or information in your family tree that substantiates that? Also, Esther appears without William in the 1841 census index. She is with her children, Elisha, Elijah, Esther, Joshua, Caleb, Ephraim, and Thomas. Does anyone have William in the 1841 census index? Thanks for any help you can give me. Sue

Duberley/Matthews (reply)

It can all be quite confusing with the various spelling permutations for Duberley. But I think Esther Duberley (b1789) is my 4th-great grand niece. And she was the daugther of John & Betty as indicated elsewhere on this thread.

I hadn't linked in the marriage to Matthews in 1813 but I did have a James Dubberley as her child in 1811 who then married Dinah Buffin and they had a number of chilrden as follows:

Esther b1837
Jane b1839
Elizabeth b1841
James b1845
Thomas James b1847
Sarah Ann b1849
Fanny b1854

I must have another look at the Duberley family tree and see if I can sort out any further information.

Hiatt-Duberly (reply)

Hi

Lily Ida Matthews (who seems to have been known as Kate) was born 03 Aug 1898 and married Eric William George Duberley b1898 in 1919. He was one of the 11 sons of Alfred Thomas Duberley b1872 and Ada Lilian Baldwin b1874. Eric and Lily had nine children. The details then get too much to mention. But if you are interested I can supply the information.

Hiatt-Duberly (reply)

Hi

I have mapped most of the Duberley's into my family tree. I can tell you that Elsie Hyatt (b1895, d1963) married Lester Albert Duberley (b1901, d1945) in 1929. Lester was the son of Alfred Thomas Duberley (b1872, d1937) and Ada Lilian Baldwin (b1874, d1944). Lester and Elsie had two children Josephine Molly (b1929) and Frank (b1933, d2000). Josephine married William Sleeman in 1952. I can't find any evidence of Frank getting married.
