Gurneys of Dymock, Kemply and Upton Bishop circa 1800 (reply)

What a wonderful website you have created. Well done.
I first came across this site a few months ago and have now come back to it. I started looking at my grandmother Florence Gurney(1885-1943)in Islington, London and traced her back to my 2xggrandfather Joseph Gurney baptised 1828 in Dymock. Your site has given me so much information that I'm now looking at my 4xggrandfather James and his wife at their marriage in 1789! I've also noticed Gurneys in the workhouse!
Thanks again for all the information. I now have to put the details into order.

Ivor GURNEY 1890 1937 Gloucester Poet (reply)

Ivor Gurney, the son of a tailor, was born in Gloucester on 28th August, 1890. Gurney was educated at King's School, Gloucester as a chorister and he won an open scholarship to the Royal College of Music in 1911.

Gurney showed considerable talent as a composer and poet but in May 1913 he was diagnosed as suffering from dyspepsia and was sent home to Gloucester to recuperate. However, it is now accepted that he had a nervous breakdown and was the first sign of bipolar illness.

On the outbreak of the First World War, Gurney volunteered for the Gloucester regiment. He was initially turned down because of his defective eyesight, but as the British Army was short of men, was allowed to join in 1915.

After training at Salisbury he was sent to Riez Bailleul on the Western Front in May 1916. Three months later he was transferred to Albert during the Somme offensive.

On 7th April 1917, Gurney was shot in the army and sent to the army hospital at Rouen. The following month he rejoined his regiment at Arras.

In July 1917 Gurney was transferred to the 184 Machine Gun Company and was moved to Buysscheure and joined the forces preparing for the offensive at Passchendaele.

Gurney was gassed at St. Julien on 10th September 1917. He was sent to Edinburgh War Hospital and while recovering a collection of his war poems, Severn and Somme, appeared in November 1917.

After the war Gurney spent time in the Newcastle General Hospital, Lord Derby's War Hospital in Warrington and the Middlesex War Hospital in St. Albans. Gurney was finally discharged from hospital and the army on 4th October 1918.

Gurney's second book of poems, War's Embers was published in May 1919. However he was unable to make a living from his writing and over the next three years worked as a farm labourer, as a pianist in a cinema and as a clerk in the Gloucester Tax Office.

Gurney suffered from a severe manic depressive illness and after several failed attempts at suicide was sent to a mental asylum in Gloucester. On 28th September 1922, Gurney was certified insane and was transferred to the City of London Mental Hospital at Dartford. He continued to write poetry and his work was published in the London Mercury.

Ivor Gurney died of bilateral pulmonary tuberculosis at the City of London Mental Hospital on 26th December, 1937. Five days later he was buried at Twigworth, Gloucestershire.

I should have looked at this forum earlier as I appear to have found several potential connections.
I have a John Gurney who married Mary Hannah Waddon on 12 October 1853. They had 11 children between 1857 and 1876 all born in the Hope Mansell/Newent area.

GURNEY of Dymock (reply)

Hi slowhands,

I think you are absolutely right, and provides a name I did not previously know.

I have on record a John Gurney, who married Mary (???), and they had two sons baptised at St. Mary's Church, Dymock. John on 12 November 1826, and Joseph on 28 December 1828. I have no other ionformation on them than that, e.g. date of birth, marriage, death.

So the location, year and Christian name of Msry fits.

As yet I have no more information on John Gurney, husband of Msry, other than in 1826 he was a 'labourer' (Presumably farm labourer) living at Great Netherton, which appears to be an area covered by St. Mary's Church Dymock.

The Dymock connection appears to confirm a growing suspicion the Gurney's I am interested in moved to London in the wake of the Industrial Revolution, and for many years whilst living in Zimbabwe I was confronted with the problem of which of about 10 000 parishes should I be looking at to get back beyond the 1837 Somerset House records.

Now I am living in England and have access to internet things are really moving along, and I am delighted to have found a connection with the glorious county of Gloucestershire, the home of the old 28th of Foot Regiment.

I will try to follow up the Hooper lead, and a million thanks for your help.

Regards

Another John Gurney.

Gurney's of Dymock

Brand new to this forum. First post.

In tracing back my family I have found a John Gurney, baptised at Dymock, Gloucestershire in 1826, and his brother Joseph, baptised at Dymock in 1828.
The sons of John and Mary Gurney of Great Netherton.

I have a lot of information on the family from the point of one of John Gurney's sons: Harry Augustus Gurney born 1868, by which time the family had moved to the Shoreditch area of London.

I have no information back beyond the 1826 baptism in Dymock.

If anything of the above sounds familiar, then I would be glad to hear from you.

Thanks
