Louisa in 1851 (reply)

I have looked at the entry and it is written as Louesa.
This not unusual as the spelling is often as the name sounds.

Milson (reply)

Milson was a popular name in the area.

As for meaning, I have seen a few thoughts - son of Miles, corruption of Miles Town...

I do wonder if Milton (from Mill Town, settlement near a Mill) was the initial name that over time ( generations) became Milson, perhaps by local dialect.

Recorded in many forms including Milson, Millson, Millsom, Millsum, Melsom, Melsome and Melson,
this is an English surname. It is said to be a patronymic of the personal name Miles, itself originating
from the pre 8th century Anglo-Saxon Milo, from the German element "mil" meaning beloved or merciful.
The personal name was recorded in England before the Norman Invasion of 1066, but it was their entry
and useage which gave it its popularity in the medieval period.

Josiah in 1851 ? (reply)

As a matter of interest, the Milton name here is in fact Milson, I have no access to the original 1851 census record but I note the GFHS transcript interprets it correctly as Milson, a name whose origin is unknown to me but one I personally have today so it goes back awhile. Is it Welsh or English?

Looking at the 1851 census original, could it also be that Louesa is Louisa, as in the baptism 15 March 1835 in Clearwell.

associated threads (reply)

Thanks for pointing me to this post, I knew it was there somewhere, I have had to return to this listing to cross-check some records. Jones is not an easy surname to work with in this area.
I think I have re-conciled all NZ family members except Josaih Jones B1839 who appears in the 1841 census, Josaih is missing from the 1851 Census but who re-appears in 1861. He was aged 12 in 1851 so perhaps on the verge of leaving home to work elsewhere. His older brother Albert B1837 also disappears from the 1851 family listing but he was more likely to have left home in GLS but did not come to NZ.
Josaih is known to be one of those who came to New Zealand in the period 1861-1865.
He married and worked as a farmer in NZ, so was probably working on a farm before he left GLS.
Are the names Josaih and John interchangable?
Is 12 too early to have left home/school, was he likely to be working as a servant in another home or farm?

Samuel Jones family in 1851 Census near Newland

Looking for the children of Samuel (1802-1890) and Maria Jones (1805-1887) the parents are known to have been in the Platwell House/Newland area in 1851 Census.
Louisa B1835, Albert B1837, Josaih B1839, Jonah or Sarah B1840, Milson B1842, George B1845, Frances Eliza B1846.
Hoping to establish who lived to adulthood, several family members left for New Zealand in the period 1861-1865.
