Wonder if a connection with Richard & Dorcas Lane ( m. 1840) also of Longhope see 1851.

Could Alfred be related to them and brought up with Silas & Ann for some reason /son of one of their daughters perhaps.

Silas also had a daughter named Dorcas Constance who went to London & married a Mr Probert.

There are a couple of candidates for an Alfred Lane b. Somerset around right time.

Hezekiah Constance may also have m. an Eliza Ellen Lane Free Bmd 1852 .

Could it be that the Lanes just took Alfred in after his father died?

How interesting. Silas/Cyrus was my great x3 grandfather. Will look into this Lane connection.
Have not looked at the Constance line for some time.
Wonder if Alfred Wm. was a Constance and as you say changed his name to Lane.
It certainly looks as if that might be the case. Odd.

She married a Thomas Savery in the Newport District Index 1870
She then moved to Glendower Strt Monmouth where I have the census returns for 1871, 1881, & 1901 but not the 1891 and I have also her Death record ANY help would be appreciated
