We regret to hear that by the present mail Mr. J. C. H. James has heard of the death of his father at the age of 80. The Rev. John H. James was the eldest surviving son of the late Mr. James of Highfield, near Lydney on Severn, and was educated at Oxford, where he graduated in honours in 1828. He married first Elizabeth, only daughter of the cele brated philanthropist and member of Parliament, Mr. William Wilberforce; and, secondly, Theodosia-Mary, daughter of Mr. Tennant, of Little Aston Hall, Staffordshire, by his wife Maria Charlotte daughter of Lord Yarborough, of which marriage Mr. J. C. H. James is the only surviving son. The late Mr. James held the Crown living of Rawmarsh, near Rotherham, and afterwards that of Avington, Berks, which he resigned in 1877, retiring to his place in Gloucestershire, where he died, endeared to the neighbourhood by his unostentatious charity and good works. The late Mr. James knowledge as an archaeologist, we may add, was in great repute in the interesting part of the west of England where he resided.
